Pernell McPhee -- Under Radar Rex signing

Look for this guy to be one of Rex's top signings.

He is a solid pass rusher and very tough against the run. Ravens can't afford to keep him with Suggs and Dumervil and Ngata.

I'm thinking they may let Hughes go and get this guy in for less.

Pernell McPhee doesn't have the stats, but his impact on the game has made him the Ravens' most dangerous defender.

Good detective work. Not a bad idea at all.

      Nice.

I wouldn't mind that if it meant using the left over $$$ to sign Peyton

Hughes is good but not for the price he's going to command.

This guy can be drop in replacement for Hughes.

I question whether McPhee will get much less money than Hughes. He is one of the top defenders on the market, him and Hughes probably get about the same money.

McPhee is going to get 5-7 million. He isn't going to come cheap

People are saying Hughes will command as much as $10 Million.

So that makes $5-7 Million for McPhee look like a deal.

Well that is cheaper than Hughes' predicted salary of 10 million. That said, I want us to re-sign Hughes as much as anyone but let's not forget we're lacking someone to play the Alan Branch role we saw in 2013 (aka a two gap DE) to me a guy like Jarvis Jenkins from the Redskins might be able to fill the role. As if the Bills do re-sign Hughes under Rex I expect him to take the Sam OLB that Manny Lawson played under Pettine on 1st and 2nd downs and obvious pass rushing downs and then maybe use Lawson as his backup.

You're talking about two different players imo.

Hughes is a standup 3-4 OLB who is a speed rusher, while McPhee is a hand down 34 DE/OLB hybrid who relies on power and quickness.

McPhee is 6'3, 280 lbs, Hughes is 6'2, 254lbs. Not sure how it would work, but I think McPhee would be a great FA signing.

If we sign McPhee how do you line our guys up? I'd think he'd be playing on the line with at the Right end position with Dareus on the nose and Kyle at the Left end position. Leaving us with Bradham at Sam OLB, Preston Brown at strong inside, Kiko at weak inside and Mario at weak OLB. It isn't a bad front seven but I worry that McPhee wouldn't be big enough to man DE full time.

Yeah, two different players, but the switch back to Rex's defense makes DE a must-have, regardless of whether or not Hughes is signed. A huge hole created unnecessarily IMO, but they need to get either a McPhee-type DE or a true NT....maybe both.

If we're looking for a DE/NT Joey Mbu might be a guy to develop. Though I'm not sure he's worth taking in the 3rd round but not sure he'd last to the 5th round either.

Amazingly, not really. He's way more versatile than Hughes.

On a good Baltimore front, he hasn't made a start since 2012, when he had six, but he played 550 snaps last season. He did so in a variety of ways.

He can line up on the nose. He can line up as an outside rusher. He can line up as an end. He can stand up.

He's not gonna be cheap, but I'd be delighted to have him. He looks like a Ryan pipedream, one of Pettine's notorious *****-kitty types.

                          Bet Cleveland grabs him.

yes, but if we sign mcphee we sorta are signing a backup for mario, as mario basically plays the same position, which would mean we'd be in a more traditional 4-3 lineup rather then a hybrid 3-4 that rex likes to run.

Nah, McPhee is an everywhere and anywhere guy. The link I gave has him on film making plays at nose and edge.
