No major shock as he got little playing time last year and because he's better suited for the 4-3 it seemed he was destined to be cut when Rex Ryan came aboard. Though the timing maybe a bit off unless we might want to bring someone and/or re-sign one of our UFA. With Kiko coming back and the thought Mario, Lawson and others can be coming off the end as standup LB's, he didn't make sense anymore. Brown is a ILB and Spikes may be re-signed. Numbers game and salary cap.

Who didn't see this coming even if Marrone stayed?

Never really seemed to see the field much.

Due to our lack of draft picks I expect the bills to be active in FA. By that I mean signing a couple of cheaper vet LBs for special teams and emergency depth. They can get someone way cheaper than Rivers.

This makes sense. Once Rivers lost his starting role to a younger cheaper player, it seemed like his days were numbered. With youth and depth at LB it makes more sense to spend that money elsewhere. I like the fact that they did it before free agency started. That might be a good indicator that they plan to be aggressive and need the additional space. Plus it gives Rivers a better chance to land a job for next season. I believe cutting Rivers saves about $1.7 mil.

I hope Rivers is saving his money. His NFL career is seeing the light at the end of its tunnel.

Not a surprise considering his pt last season and the switch back to Ryan's D...certainly doesn't create a hole, and frees up a few bucks to fill a couple of holes now necessitated by moving away from Schwartz (DE, NT).
