That's how Bill Parcells described the Cowboys' franchise when he took over as coach in January.

As the Cowboys prepare for training camp, which begins with players reporting Friday in San Antonio, they aren't much different than the team Parcells inherited.

What are the Cowboys?

They are essentially a downtrodden team because the numbers don't lie. They have had three consecutive 5-11 seasons. They are 49-63 since the 1995 season, when they won the last of their three Super Bowls in the 1990s. And they are six years removed from their last playoff victory.

Parcells' job is to bring back the glory days and restore the greatness of America's Team. The two-time Super Bowl champion coach is a proven rebuilder. That's why owner Jerry Jones made him the highest-paid coach in Cowboys history with a four-year, $18 million deal.
