    Barnett watches practice, then signs

There were a lot of no-shows for the start of Green Bay Packers training camp Saturday. The only one worth noting, though, was linebacker Nick Barnett.

The Packers' first-round pick in this year's NFL draft didn't participate in the afternoon practice at Clarke Hinkle Field. Consider it the only practice time he'll miss this summer because of contractual reasons. On Saturday night, the Packers announced they signed Barnett.

His agent, Jack Scharf, said the length of the deal is seven years, but it can be voided to five. Scharf wouldn't elaborate on the financial value of the contract, other than to say it's comparable to the seven-year, $8.8 million deal Kansas City recently gave running back Larry Johnson, taken two spots ahead of Barnett in the first round at No. 27.
