"This reported new deal for McCoy COULD BE the precursor to getting Hughes locked up before Tuesday. Frees up some $. Let's hope and see."

It's a key step for any direction we may wish to consider.

It's not a new deal just changing the terms of his current one.

Hughes is a one trick pony.

eh..so are you, but we keep you around.

Hughes was the missing piece on the DL. As much as people talked about him benefitting from the other 3, they benefited from him.

On more than one occasion someone else got a sack because he chased a QB and force him to move to his right or step up.

He can be replaced, but it won't be nearly as easy as people think.

Yeah, but it's a pretty good trick.

Yeah, but it's a pretty good trick.

Yes - but Hughes was "figured out", so to speak, in BUF's latter games. Not bashing him - the opposition smelled how he was being used, and reacted.

I agree with you. Hopefully we can get a guy who can get between 4-7 sacks to start in his place. Right now I wouldn't be shocked if we make a push for LaMarr Woodley as he has Whaley ties in Pittsburgh and has played in a 3-4 scheme before and might be an affordable option if we try to land a big name TE or OG.

I'm at the point of being OK with letting Hughes walk, IMO Spikes is a bigger priority.

He was set to walk once JPP and Houston got franchised and he didn't. It took most of his competition off the market.

Hughes is a one trick pony.

His tricks worked because of the ponies he played with, I would re-sign him, He's going to flop on his own tho.

It's not a new deal just changing the terms of his current one.

If the team is changing the terms/structure of his current contract, it's a new deal.

hughes is gone.

The only rub is the Bills had more than 100 sacks over the past 2 years, predominantly from the best DL in the game.

They benefited from each other...the way a good line is supposed to play.

For years people were talking about having a line like this. The old line "you can't double team everyone" was big on this board for a while.

Well..that's what you have now, and more.

Has Dareus benefited from having Hughes on the edge? His sack numbers last year were about double of any year he's had pre-Hughes.

They've fed off each other for the past 2 years. And its been damned fun to watch.

Dareus is collapsing the middle, QB looks to roll to his left, but..he can't!
Because Hughes is bearing down on him.
Dareus racks up a sack.

Or vice versa. Hughes is bearing down on a QB, the QB looks to evade him and scamble up the middle.

Too bad...Kyle Williams and/or Dareus are waiting right there....too bad...another sack. Feeding off each other, its what a good DL does. Hounds to the hunters.

Ask Joe Thomas what he thinks of Hughes...he gave up 3 times the holding penalties as he had the entire season...and a defensive TD to boot.

Ask Nate Solder what he thinks of him. NE had to keep sending a TD to help out, because Hughes was schooling him.

Don't know about you..but I've loved watching the DL work the past 2 seasons.

We haven't seen this type of play since the days of Spikes, Sam Adams and Pat Williams.

Jimmi started a thread about halfway through the season, what a pleasure it was to watch a dominant defense for a change. I couldn't agree more.

Hughes is an important part of the d because his game is so unlike our other lineman. He's a pursuit specialist, he's an irritant. That works really well with other overpowering lineman.

Before Hughes there was many times if we didn't get to the qb in 3 seconds, we weren't getting to him at all, no matter how long he had the ball. His pesty game play never allows a true comfort to the qb and he creates sacks outside of his own by chasing the qb into harms way for Dareus or Mario to chomp up.

He will excel if we keep him. I want to keep him.

How was our DL with Kyle, Dareus, and Mario before Hughes came here? Not remotely as potent as it was last season for sure, even with Kiko.

That's because the dline was Dareus, under-sized and out of place NT KW, and Carrington/Branch...Mario and Hughes lined up as OLB's. The team did still manage over 50 sacks though under Pettine, albeit not faring well against the run.
