    Texans enter training camp with experience, high hopes

    The Texans had the built-in excuse of being an expansion team to explain why they might not have been up to par at certain positions entering training camp last season, but that would have been taking the easy way out and coach Dom Capers wanted no part of it.

    Nevertheless, the quality of competition for jobs at some positions was so low, four rookies were working with the starting offense on the first day of camp, and there were six rookie starters on offense by season’s end.

    Capers encouraged his staff to be patient through the growing pains and assured them the payoff would be more seasoned players and better competition for jobs in the team’s second year.
