Will a $33.55 million dead cap number prevent the Saints from doing anything with Drew Brees this off season?

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/drew-brees/

The Saints are screwed either way.

Pay Brees $26.4 million for 2015, or trade him at best.

The dead cap money can be spread out over 5 years, yes? Or no? Not sure.

How does $33.55 million in dead cap money affect the Saints situation with Drew Brees?

No, dead cap is partially the prorated portion moved up into the current year.

If dead cap is prorated, what's the better deal?

Release Brees, trade Brees, or keep him?

If you're the Saints GM, what do you do with Drew Brees?

Dead cap ISN'T prorated, it's the prorated portion moved up into one season.

It says in the contract notes that his base salary for this season became fully guaranteed on Feb. 4th. So if they cut him the Saints would still be on the hook for his $18.75 mil base salary, plus $7.4 mil x 2 for prorated bonus money for this season and next. That appears to be where the $33.55 mil in dead money comes from, but I believe that would only occur if they cut him. I believe that if he was traded, his new team would be responsible for his guaranteed base salary and the Saints would only have $14.8 mil of dead money for this season. I could be wrong though. I just can't see the Saints trading Brees.

If they were going to cut him they'd of done it before 2/4 when his 2015 salary became guaranteed. Brees is saying in NO.

Brees' contract has a $33.55 million dead cap number in 2015 compared to only a $7.4 million dead cap number in 2016.

Is this a no brainer decisions?

I'm not sure because, "cap guru," is not me. Calling all cap experts, please help.

If Brees gets traded vs. released this off seaason, does that make any difference in terms of dead cap money to the Saints?

I'm just trying to get in to the mind of Mickey Loomis right now.

UPDATE, thanks, Novacane and thanks Ed for clarifying things.

The Bills aren't going to have Drew Brees as their QB in 2015.

I forgot to thank YardRat too.

Brees is staying in New Orleans for 2015.

2016? That's more likely.

It's also possible to split dead cap over two years using the post June 1st designation, but i believe that only applies to cuts.

He won't be cut in 2016 either unless he falls off a cliff this season.

Yeah, don't you all realize the Saints would not be contenders without Brees & his HUGE contract?

Were you slamming Brees' contract in 2013 when he won 12 games including a road playoff game, outdoors, in Philly?

Yeah and people will go to the Superdome to see a 7-9 Drew Brees led Saints over a 4-12 Drew Stanton led Saints.

Stanton is interchangeable with other bums.

Brees won't be going anywhere unless he's absolutely awful in 2015.

Yeah, I agree.

I said before, the Saints would have a hard time selling a trade of Brees to the fans.

And as I said before, his pay for this year can be viewed by Saints fans as pay for what he has done for them in the past.
