3-4 assumption. It's not etched in stone, Yard.

Is Rex lying when he states multiple fronts ,based on his roster ?

I think he's telling a white lie. When has he ever run a true multiple scheme?

Sure he'll use some different looks but he's always been a 34 base guy.

You think Rex will waste Dareus at the nose? Doubt it. He won't be using Dareus like he was using Harrison in NY. I think Stefan Charles could be the NT.

I seem to remember Dareus doing pretty well at the nose the last time he played there.

Not sure how much "nose" Dareus was actually playing though, especially on passing downs. Pettine was very multiple and was often playing with an even front.

No, I think Rex will utilize Darues and allow him to relish at the NT position.

I would have guessed:

Sam - Mario Williams
4-5 DE - Marcel Dareus
Mike - Nigel Bradham
DT/NT - Kyle Williams
Will - Preston Brown
4-5 DE - Jarius Wynn
Jack - Jerry Hughes

But :idunno:

I'd be surprised if Rex put Dareus on the nose, but that line-up is probably the best fit across the board considering strenghts/weaknesses. Cleve's is closest to what was run under Pettine. Lawson actually started 14 games in '13 over Hughes, who came off the bench, but with the new investment I doubt that's repeated. Hopefully Wynn or Charles or Bryant can step up and be this season's version of Carrington/Branch.

It's called a 4-3 Under

Anybody can call it anything they want, the fact remains unless Rex does a 180 and adopts the wide nine, the players, especially all along the front seven, are going to being playing different positions and have different responsibilities.

I thought Rex runs more of a 4-6 then a traditional 3-4?

People keep getting stuck on standard 3-4, where the nose is a two gap space eater. As said Ryan's 3-4 is a 4-3 under with people moving all over, showing one look shifting to others, 4-6, nickel, etc. Uses an extra lineman or DB in place of the 3rd LB. It's just not the Fairbanks-Bullough 3-4 ala Smerlas, Curly Culp, etc. It's all disguise and dynamic.

I appreciate what Yardrat is saying, and to some extent I agree. I loved Pettine's D, but Schwartz really nailed it with his wide 9.

But that said, Pettine was Rexy Jr. Rexy does D, it's just what he does. Ryan is the Yoda of defense, Pettine was Qui-Gon Jinn and got killed. Ryan is only 52, so he has another 848 years of savage, creative defenses left before he passes peacefully like Yoda, I figure, though he was thwarted by Darth Idzik, and craves rematches with Darth Belichick which could certainly yet spell his theoretical doom.

Some might think this a stupid analogy, but as I was typing it, Rex appeared and corrected my spelling, gave me some delicious snacks, and shared an anecdote before he was just....gone again, slashing an RRR in my wall with a lightsaber. I think it was meant to be RR but he lost his place when he snatched a snack with a merry bellow as he did it.

Who was the DL who lit it up last pre-season on the 2nd or 3rd team?

I would have rather had him on the team rather than a 2nd kick off kicker.

Yanno, if they need an extra DL, Carriker from the vet combine might be worth a flyer. He benched 225 40 times at age 30, NFL combine best for college kids was 37.

I'd rather bring back Carrington, we already know he can be plugged in opposite Dareus and produce in this defense.

I'd be fine with Carrington but I think he'll get other offers yet.
