What does that mean on Harvin contract? 3 years voids to one?

Jason La Canfora @JasonLaCanfora · 11m11 minutes ago

As a practical matter, Percy Harvin signed a 3yr/$24M deal w/BUF; voids to 1yr/$6M. Gets $3M to sign, $2.9M base salary, $100K workout bonus

Probably means it's a 3 year contract with the last 2 years voidable by the player. Means if harvin has a great year he'll void it so he can get a bigger contract

It means we're all-in on this year and we're going to win the Super Bowl so we don't have to worry about the future. :)

Probably voidable by either party if there is $18M left over the last 2 years plus $2M of the $3M signing bonus if the deal is not voided.

His cap hit is only $4M this year if it is not voided.

The Bills can void it and it appears, given the cap hits for 2016 and 2017, they re incentivized to do so.

The real question is, did they really need an additional $2m in cap space this season?

It's almost always voidable by the team. Harvin would need to have quite a year to find a contract worth more than 18m over two more years (if it was voidable by the player). And he would have to have quite a year to get that money from the Bills after the 2015 season.

These are the kinds of contracts I watch for when big numbers are put out. Sometimes the "voidable" parts don't come to light until later, shortly before the team cuts a player and saves them a big part of the contract.

Yeah, that's a good question alright. Seems logical that it's the Bills' intention to spend right up to the cap this year.

It doesn't seem very likely that Harvin gets the last two years on that deal at $10 million per year, either. Not at this point. We'll see. But this is the the very definition of a "prove it" deal. There is a lot of money on the table for him if he impresses this year...and he would REALLY have to impress for the Bills to keep him in 2016 for that money.

They'll have to eat that $2 million in dead cap in 2016 if he isn't on the roster that year.

At least that's the way things are looking as per the reports right now.

It's probably means the Bills will void it if Harvin acts like a tool and doesn't play up to the contract.

                  Not probably, Bert.

Harvin should be totally motivated to behave himself and play up to the best of his ability if he's worth one cent. That's for sure, and I think that's the main point. Another interesting thing to follow this upcoming year...lots of things to be entertained by, ask me.

Probably 'voidable' by the player, considering if none of the last two years salary is guaranteed at any point the team can achieve the same result simply by cutting him.

Hopefully... but wasnt it the same situation for Harvin last year? Didnt seem to motivate him either. One can hope though.

Its only voidable by the Bills from what I am reading. That is great. If he plays to potential then we can either keep him or trade him for a high pick. If not you cut him and lose little.

                          Smart contract.

If Harvin goes back to being a malcontent the contract can just be voided and the team can be done with him.

It also gives Harvin some incentive to behave like a model citizen so he sees all the money.

                          Win win contract.

I can't wait until I see Harvin break a quick slant for a 60 yard TD, while some here post Joe Smith could have taken it for 15 yards and saved the cap 2 Mil.

There's no need to have language that addresses the team's ability to void the contract unless there are guarantees in the next two seasons. That must be the case, if the above is true.
