In most locales, the news that an agent met face-to-face with a chief negotiator would merit hardly a mention in the newspaper -- and probably yawns from the most plugged-in fans. Last week, however, eyebrows raised and a legitimate buzz emerged from a one-day meeting between the agent for Vikings first-round pick Kevin Williams and Rob Brzezinski, the team's vice president of football operations.

Such is the heightened tension and the increased scrutiny surrounding the Vikings' efforts to sign Williams. Issues both in and out of their control have conspired to raise the organization's level of difficulty and eliminate any benefit of the doubt it would otherwise receive should Williams become a holdout.

Like every NFL team, the Vikings are dealing this year with a what is called a "flat rookie pool." The term essentially means teams cannot devote more salary-cap space on their rookie classes than they did last year.
