View Full Version : For the BPA draft mindset

Based on CBS Sportsline's 'big board' here is a list of potential draft picks for Buffalo going strictly by 'best player available' at their current spots for selections. The bolded are what the picks would be if the Bills war room board mirrored this list, but I'm going to extend the BPA premise a little bit and assume for discussion sake that the team has 5 players scored the same (equal draft value) at each pick. Also assumed is that players slotted prior to Buffalo's picks have come off the board and already been selected...

#50-
Danielle Hunter, DE, LSU
Nate Orchard, DE, Utah
Carl Davis, DT, Iowa
Laken Tomlinson, OG, Duke
Jalen Collins, CB, LSU

#81-
Phillip Dorsett, WR, Miami
Trey Flowers, DE, Arkansas
Arie Kouandijo, OG, Bama
Tre McBride, WR, W & M
Grady Jarrett, DT, Clemson

#155-
Justin Cox, CB, Miss St
Darren Waller, WR, Ga Tech
Jalston Fowler, FB, Bama
Geneo Grissom, OLB, Okla
Lorenzo Doss, CB, Tulane

#187-
Justin Manton, K, La-Monroe
Austin Hill, WR, Ariz
Quandre Diggs, CB, Texas
Wes Saxton, TE, S.Ala
Terry Poole, OT, SD St

#193-
Erick Dargan, SS, Oregon
Stefan Diggs, WR, Mary
Xzavier Dickson, OLB, Bama
Hayes Pullard, ILB, USC
Nick Boyle, TE, Delaware

#234-
Edmond Robinson, OLB, Newberry
Cam Thomas, CB, W.Kent
Laurence Gibson, OT, VTech
Jamarcus Nelson, WR, UAB
Cody Fajardo, QB, Nevada

Happy with that draft? Substitute someone, somewhere, within the five listed for each pick? Go off the board and take somebody ranked lower?

------------

Those highlighted at #50 are all interesting to me. Wasn't Orchard a major handful as an edge rusher at the Senior Bowl? I recall reports that Davis was also very tough to handle. And of course the power guard.

Dorsett is Roscoe Parrish 2.0.

Beyond that, who the hell knows.

Yeah, I know, but for the sake of accuracy I had to use him.

Any time kickers and punters get in there it rattles me.

Besides that, not having a clue with what they'll do this draft, nothing much will get me crazy upset this draft.

I think most boards give scores or tiers rather than just a ranked list. So BPA is really a choice that means all these players have about the same value. So there isn't really a need to take a kicker just to satisfy BPA.

That's why I grouped them.

Can't one suck bad enough for two of them?

Reagrdless of what they say, teams rank need first and pick the best from the group...unless the group as a whole is poor (see QB).

Would be very surprised if 1 of our 2 picks on Friday wasn't an OL. I expect at least 2 by the end of the draft.

Tbh, I think you need to do more of a 'spread' for the values. Chances are there are going to be a couple of guys before the #50 pick, who aren't taken, so limiting the 'choice' to 50 and below, in whichever set of rankings you want to use, seems to me to be likely to miss out on a couple of options. Same for other rounds, but you could possibly have a slightly larger 'spread' for those, due to more guys being taken who aren't ranked where expected.

I do think that it's a more interesting exercise this year, than in years past, as the Bills really don't have too many holes to fill, and are much more likely to be 'BPA' on a simple talent basis, than in years past, where 'need' would factor in much more heavily.

Truth, but it's impossible to try and guess what guys are going to drop, who's going to jump up, and especially how any of the 32 teams actually have their boards set up. I thought about expanding the lists as the rounds went deeper, but eschewed the idea in favor of a little bit of brevity. Hell, realistically once you get beyond the first round or 40 or so picks guys start popping up all over the place.
