As they prepare to open training camp later this week, the Rams remain one of the most compelling teams in professional sports. There's always some frenzied activity going on in their beehive. The Rams are dramatic when they win, dramatic when they lose, and rarely fail to entertain.

There were a zillion story lines during last year's troubling but fascinating 7-9 season, and I don't have the space to review them all. But so much of this team's psyche evolves around two players, quarterback Kurt Warner and running back Marshall Faulk. During the Rams' 1999-2001 run Warner and Faulk cornered the market on league Most Valuable Player awards. They gave this team its confidence, its personality, its drive to be the best.

Last season Warner threw three touchdown passes and 11 interceptions and did not win any of his six starts. His QB rating slumped to a shocking 67.4. Warner's performance suffered mostly because of injuries, though he spent much of last season denying the significance of his wounds. And we saw the great Faulk's wheels blow out, as a bad ankle limited him to fewer than 1,000 yards rushing for the first time since 1996.
