No word on plans of Jack Eichel

No player on the Providence College hockey team felt more vindicated than Trevor Mingoia. The junior forward transferred from Union following the 2011-12 season. He then had to watch as the Dutchmen…

The freshman forward is expected to be the second pick of the 2015 NHL draft, right behind Erie Otters center Connor McDavid of the Ontario Hockey League. The NHL teams with the best shot of landing Eichel figure to be Buffalo, Arizona, Edmonton and Toronto.

While many have assumed the newly minted Hobey Baker Award winner would be the classic one-and-done star, it might not be the slam dunk some think.

Former Terrier Colin Wilson was selected seventh overall by Nashville in the 2008 NHL draft, but returned to lead the Terriers to the 2009 NCAA title. Current Blackhawks star Jonathan Toews was the third pick in the 2006 NHL draft, but went back to North Dakota for another season.

Eichel discussed the advantages of a return engagement on Commonwealth Avenue.

“It would be another great year of development, college hockey and life with coach (David) Quinn,” Eichel said. “There are positives to it any way you look at it. At the end of the day, when a decision has to be made, I will make it with my family and with my heart. I don’t want to be somewhere that I don’t want to be.”

He will play in the NHL next year and 80% chance it's with Buffalo. He skipped him senior year in HS - combined it with his Jr year by taking extra classes just so he could play one year at BU. Otherwise he would have gone straight from HS to pro - like Tom Barrasso if u remember that far back. His talk above is agent speak - why lose your negotiating leverage by saying you want to play in the NHL the next year.

This makes Murray's (he with the personality of a snail) comments last night more relevant.

what happens if we draft him and he stays in college.
Do we then get him next year automatically without having to use another pick?
Or is the pick just wasted and the team you have to spent a pick next year. I.e. meaning the team that wins the lottery next year will get Eichel (assuming that there is no college player that is more sought after next year).
Which one is correct? Do we keep his rights?

And another question since I am new in hockey. Will Eichel play in the NHL or will we delegate him to our farm team or whatever the term is?
Watching solely football I am used to that top rookies do play right away. Seems not be the case in hockey.

The sabres will retain his rights until he graduates. Sounds like he will either go pro, or play out one more season in college, then go pro.

The sooner he gets in the league, the sooner he hits free agency where the real money is. I bet he plays in Buffalo next year.
