Is this team moving forward or backwards?

    Bills meet with Brad Smith

The Bills are huddling with a player with whom they are quite familiar.

Free agent wide receiver Brad Smith, who played for the Bills in 2011 and 2012, is meeting with Buffalo on Tuesday, the team announced.

Smith played for new Bills head coach Rex Ryan in 2009 and 2010, and he worked with Bills quarterbacks coach David Lee in 2012.

The 31-year-old Smith has played the last two seasons for Philadelphia, appearing in 19 games as a reserve. Though he caught just three passes and carried just once for the Eagles, he notched 14 special teams tackles and recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown.

According to the Bills’ website, the team sees Smith as a special teams member and wide receiver.

when you bring in players like this for limited roles that is better than when he's being signed to big dollars for the #2 position.

i don't think a signing like this is indicative of anything positive or negative.

I don't get it at all. Harvin's the jet sweep guy, Taylor's the speedy inaccurate QB, Thigpen is the return specialist (a much better one). What would this offer?

helluva athlete, great special teamer, seemed like a good guy. never quite found his offensive niche. if he wants to come to camp and they feel they have the room to apply veteran pressure why not. worth a convo

He seems like a great guy, he's just not that great a football player. If they are looking for a vet wideout option, there are far better available right now.

Smith will be a special teams player & EMERGENCY WR.

And he will come CHEAP. I would bet cheaper than the better options you are talking about.

It would provide good pressure/leadership to the players who want to make the team for special teams. Can't hurt imo

The move itself is fine if it was not accompanied by the fact they haven't brought in any FA OLs whatsoever.

I'm starting to get annoyed by Rex's obsession to bring in players he has coached before to horrendous team records.

Seems he can't get over the past.

We currently have 11 wideouts on the roster. Even leaving out all the obvious roster bubble guys, that leaves Watkins, Woods, Harvin, and Hogan as the starters with Goodwin, Thigpen, and Easley as the emergency/special teams guys. Who on that list would you take a 31yo Smith over? For me, none of them. So if we are not upgrading the position, signing him now is a waste. He's not in any demand. If we have a rash of injuries then we can explore that.

If this happens, it would be only the 2nd signing from his past. There's been a lot of talk about guys like Harris, Revis, Powell, etc but we haven't made a serious run at any of them.

Smith hasn't done **** from the wildcat in at least 5 years. That myth is busted.

He's not useless as an STer or 5th WR but I don't see what he offers that Goodwin or Hogan don't.

Richie Incognito was a free agent and we brought him in.
