    Simms takes QB crash course

LAKE BUENA VISTA - Injuries happen at an alarming rate in the NFL, and though a rookie quarterback isn't expected to contribute on game day, he is expected to be ready if needed.

It happened to Shaun King, who found himself starting in the NFC Championship Game as a rookie in 1999.

And it could happen to Chris Simms.

"He's a smart guy, he knows," said King, who led the Bucs to the NFC Championship Game after injuries sidelined Trent Dilfer and Eric Zeier. "You watch enough sports, you don't even have to talk about it."

Added starting quarterback Brad Johnson, "You never know with injuries. He may be playing in the first game. He's taken that on himself."more

    Bucs' Simms Learning Gruden's System

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Practice was over, and the coach and rookie quarterback sat on a golf cart in the middle of the field, talking about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offense.

Coach Jon Gruden wanted to connect with Chris Simms while the day's work was fresh on their minds.

"It's really the first time that Chris has had a chance to run the offense without some guy screaming in his ear. I just wanted to go over the stimulus that he got in that period, what he saw and why he did what he did and maybe a couple of pointers that maybe he could do better the next time," Gruden said.

Simms rises to the occasion, starts to prove that he belongs

TOKYO - For Chris Simms, it was the Land of the Rising Son.

Playing in his first NFL game, the son of Super Bowl-winning quarterback Phil Simms threw his first pro touchdown, a 4-yarder to receiver Reggie Barlow.

Simms, 22, finished 7-for-10 for 70 yards. But what he is most proud of is an audible at the line of scrimmage that produced the touchdown.
