View Full Version : If La’el Collins Falls to Us We Need to Draft Him

It is a risk, but if it is true he is not a suspect, we are getting an OL with potential top 10 of the draft talent at #50 overall.

I say roll the dice.

Unfortunately "he's not a suspect" usually turns into " he's a suspect."

Drafting a potential murderer is a nightmare.

Mike Mayock said no NFL team will draft Collins tomorrow..

"We have identified where La'el was the day the lady was murdered to establish he was nowhere around," Collins' attorney, Jim Boren, told ESPN. "We have offered to give names, witnesses who can vouch for his whereabouts that day until after the woman's body was discovered. We believe that when [police] have verified that information, that they will rule him out as a suspect in the homicide, just as I believe he should be."

He won't be interviewed until after the draft and with Aaron Hernandez? This is a business, I'm sure he is blacklisted.

They don't seem in too much of a hurry to put him in custody. I'd say the worry is that he's friends with the killer rather than the trigger man himself.

After Hernandez it's just too much of a risk. He may very well have nothing to do with it, but hindsight is 20/20 and he did have something to do with it, it's gonna look REAL bad.

I remember that. The mad hatter is one tough coach and doesn't put up with the BS at LSU.

After the last year of bad PR for the NFL, it's no surprise this guy is now viewed as poison...deserving or not.

I think thats the bigger worry. If someone isnt smart enough to distance themselves from the people that would murder someone what does that say about him

He's not off my board, just not at 50. I'd roll the dice on him at a spot that a draft choice would have a hard time making the team at.

Adding to the intrigue of him, Scheffer just tweeted that if he isn't drafted tonight he won't sign a contract with a team this year

He is being advised by his agent and that is the right move if he is not drafted tonight.

If he is drafted in the 4th round or later, he will make peanuts and is better off re-entering the draft next year after his name is cleared.

That worked out well for Mike Williams and Maurice Clarett.

One year away from football and he'll be basically useless.

Its the right move from a business sense, but I don't think an ultimatum is going to make teams that were unsure any more willing to draft him. And is someone who sat out of football for a whole year really going to go in the first couple of rounds?

I guess.

The kid is a 21 year old who went to college where he grew up. Until last week, he was expected to be drafted in the middle of the 1st round.

The woman who was shot dead was a 29 years old and is described as his former girlfriend. Someone shot her in the head when she opened the door. She was 8+ months pregnant. The baby survived.

Right now we do not know if he is the father. I believe they can prove he was not in the same town when she was shot. However, he could be still involved in the crime or maybe just has information as to who may have shot her (perhaps whoever else was ****ing her).

If he is involved, it is a wasted draft pick since you will cut him immediately once he is arrested. The Bills have wasted 2nd rounders before.

If he is not involved, you get an OL that would have been the 2nd or 3rd off the board who can play both Guard and Tackle.

I say roll the dice.

OL La'el Collins reps hired firm to do a polygraph test on him Thursday regarding case of murdered ex-girlfriend. He passed, FWIW.

Real easy for you to do that. Not so easy for an NFL GM who make their living trying to get good players for their given team.

They have to just pretend this is not an option at all.

First, I don't believe you can just refuse a team and re-enter the draft after declaring. You become a free agent. Secondly, I would want nothing to do with this kid until the murder stuff is clear. I don't see him being drafted.

As a GM or owner you can't take this guy because the headlines will always attach your team to an ongoing murder investigation.

Check this out:

"If La'el Collins goes undrafted, he's a FA --> CANNOT go back into draft. If he gets drafted and does not sign --> CAN re-enter in 2016."

https://twitter.com/Gil_Brandt/status/594517764062089216

Did he screw himself? Stating that he won't sign? If it pushes teams to not draft him he can't re-enter the draft and screws himself. But if a team drafts him they risk wasting the pick because he may not sign...

Very strange situation.

Why would Brandt think it's better to re-enter the draft than be a free agent? If he goes undrafted & is cleared he can have a bidding war for his services & can pick his team. If he has to go back into the draft he doesn't choose where to go. The best thing (if he's not guilty) is to go undrafted.

Sheft and Mort reported that a team that wanted him in the 4th took him off their board...bad news is coming for Collins. Should have been shopping for mansions next week...now he'll be working to keep out of a prison cell.

Unless the teams know more than the public info, starting to look like the commish has spoken and this kid is going undrafted. Otherwise the risk-reward would have seen him drafted by now.

If true, this doesn't surprise me. You know at least a few NFL teams have their people and investigators working on this.
No one drafting him tells me that no one is coming forward to clear this kid.

If a highly respected official came forward and said he is not a serious suspect. I believe someone would have spent a pick on him.

This is a terrible situation. And as usual the NFL handled it wrong. The kid should have been held out of the draft, for everyone's protection.
