Offensive highlights: Trent Green hooked up with Marc Boerigter, who was covered tightly by Dexter McCleon, on a beautifully executed deep passing play... Rookie first-round pick Larry Johnson showed explosion and good moves in a nine-on-seven running drill... Veteran left tackle Willie Roaf looks as if he's in midseason form. He dominated a one-on-one pass rush drill.
• Defensive highlights: The defense clearly got the best of the offense in a seven-on-seven passing drill, batting down a handful of passes... McCleon seemingly came out of nowhere to break up a pass intended for a wide-open Eddie Kennison, who was running a crossing route... Linebacker Shawn Barber broke off a pass rush and showed excellent athletic ability by leaping in the air and deflecting a Green pass intended for Johnnie Morton.
OFF AND RUNNING
Three-and-a-half weeks of training camp officially opened Sunday afternoon with a two-hour workout in shorts and helmets. The first two-a-day practice will take place today, and both practices will be in full pads.
Coach Dick Vermeil declared Sunday's practice a success based on the fact the workout was generally crisp with no obvious first-day problems.
"They came out, and we had almost no mistakes," Vermeil said. "No illegal procedures, no quarterback-center exchange problems, no jumping offsides, none of that stuff on the very first practice. I think that's a reflection of their concentration in the off-season."
