Friedman: NHL to end draft pick compensation for teams that fire coach, GM

NHL dicks over Sabres again! First it was the cockamaney scheme that they came up with for the draft lottery system worst team in the league has 20% chance of getting the 1st pick, and now this happens Sabres not only had to give up one third round pick but 2 one to speak with Babcock and the other they had to give to Pittsburgh for Bylsma.

NHL teams will soon be able to hire jettisoned coaches and general managers without having to worry about compensation.

At present, clubs like the Boston Bruins, San Jose Sharks, and Pittsburgh Penguins can seek draft picks when the likes of Peter Chiarelli, Todd McLellan, and Dan Bylsma - all of whom were fired by their respective employers - secure new gigs.

There's an increasing sense that this is quite unnecessary, seeing as the new Edmonton Oilers general manager and bench boss, as well as the new Buffalo Sabres head coach, were free agents, so to speak.

They're going to get together at the Board of Governors meeting, which is going to be in Vegas during the (NHL) Awards, and it's expected this will be straightened out.

They'll say, "Look, if somebody's been fired, you don't get compensation for them." It's only if you get somebody still working for a team. That's the way it's going to work out in the future.

They'll say, "Look, if somebody's been fired, you don't get compensation for them." It's only if you get somebody still working for a team. That's the way it's going to work out in the future. The meeting is scheduled to take place after the Stanley Cup Final and prior to the draft, leaving the ability to scoop picks for essentially nothing decidedly in the past.

Sabres should get their third rd picks back if the NHL was fair but that weasel Gary Bettman won't do it! FIRE BETTMAN!

Gary Bettman made it very clear he wanted a black-and-white rule without controversy, which didn’t happen.

I also wondered if it’s possible Buffalo and Edmonton could get their picks back, but there’s no answer at this point.

It's almost like the team that fires these guys get rewarded for cutting them loose, it's crazy talk.

The Sabres had to give up a 3rd to talk to Babcock? Was that in addition to the 3rd they had to give up if they had signed him?

No, not to talk to Babcock. They filed paperwork for compensation if he signed I believe

This, we had to agree to compensate the Pens if we signed him as our coach. I'd just have as soon waited until after the draft to officially make him our coach, that way the 3rd pick would probably be worse.

Why give up anything for a guy that was fired. I never understood that.

I understand it to be 2 different things...
                      1) If a team fires a coach outright (no continuation of salary), then no draft pick compensation is involve
                      2) If a team relieves a coach of his duties (continuation of salary), then the team has a right to draft compensation.

Bylsma was relieved of his duty... Babcock was still under contract.

The Sabres had to file paperwork to compensate Detroit before they could speak to Babcock, but they didn't have to provide the pick to have talks as the OP stated. There was no requirement to file paperwork to speak with Blysma, the negotiations happened once the offer was extended.

I still don't understand why you would want to risk losing a head coach to another team over a 3rd round pick at hypothetical slot 15 vs. 21, or 10 vs. 16, or whatever the numbers would have been. The player picked in that slot may not even contribute to the team at all, whereas the coach contributes starting day 1. Your logic makes absolutely no sense.

The coach gets a fully guaranteed contract. If he is fired, he still gets paid. It makes sense in that they are still a paid employee of their respective clubs.

It does go a little far if the guy is fired though because clearly you no longer wanted to have him in your organization. Should be sorted out soon. Also look at the list of 3rd rounders playing and playing at a high level and I think you will breathe a little easier.
