Will The 2015 Buffalo Bills Defense Be The Best In Team History?

Pettine's defense in 2013 was good. Schwartz's defense in 2014 was very good.

Will Rex Ryan's 2015 defense be the best ever in team history?

Feels like the Bills have more talent on defense now than at any other time, even more than the early 90's.

What excites me the most about the Bills defense this year is their ability to play both a 3-4 and a 4-3 scheme.

Versatility and disguising the defense is a huge asset to have for the Bills.

Nobody has any idea who will be starting at nose tackle. Kyle Williams, Dareus? Charles?

Will Mario Williams be a linebacker or a defensive end?

Jerry Hughes, linebacker or speed rusher off the edge?

Both? Don't expect to see anything in preseason.

Rex Ryan was the defensive line coach of the 2000 Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens.

The Ravens didn't score a touchdown in 5 consecutive games that season.

Tony Banks was benched in favor of Dilfer and the rest is Back to the Bills Future?

    Great Scott!

That team had one of the best defenses in NFL history and Rex Ryan was a big part of it.

I think he has the same kind of talent to work with today.

21.1 gigawatts on defense with Kim and Terry Pegula as the flux capacitor.

Bruce Smith, Biscuit, Shane Conlin, Talley, Paup, Spielman, Cowart, Ted Washington, a lot of names from past defenses come to mind.

I don't think any of those teams had as much talent as the Bills do today, especially in the secondary.

Yes. Also '64-'65, and 2014. Obviously no games have been played yet, so to even attempt to rank this year's version is extremely premature, but I don't expect them to be as good as those listed.

There isn't anybody on this defense that even comes close to those mentioned. Many are young, however, and still have the opportunity to make their mark. Those are awfully high standards to live up to, though.

I'll know when I see some stats. I'm fine with "who knows" for now though.

You know Rex. He doesn't want to have to best defense in Bills history, he wants to have the best defense of All-Time.

Does he see the same kind of talent in this group that he did 15 years ago in Baltimore?

            I think he does.

Marcell Dareus is in the, "Bruce Smith," category of defensive talent.

Mario Williams is too. So the Bills have 2 Bruce Smith's.

Kyle Williams is a better player than Phil Hansen. Sorry, Phil.

Jerry Hughes is one of the most talented defensive players the Bills have ever had. He's a lot like Darryl Talley.

I think Gilmore will be a better player than Nate Odomes.

Aaron Williams is a better player than Mark Kelso. Sorry Mark!

LOL...You need to stop with these silly comparisons, I don't even think you believe in some of those.

Jerry Hughes rode the bench in the last incarnation of this defense in favor of Manny Lawson.

Then why did the Bills bother to resign him for big money?

Maybe because he proved he could do more than Manny Lawson. Hughes turns 27 years young in August, he's in the prime of his career.

He was a better fit for Schwartz's defense, and produced last season. Granted, he produced sacks also in '13, but the reality is he was a situational player that season, a pass-rushing specialist. It will be interesting to see how he performs as a starter under Ryan, because even if Lawson is a better fit they aren't going to pay Hiughes that kind of money to be a part-timer.

I think Rex Ryan could be the best defensive-minded coach we've ever had and there is a ton of talent to work with, so it's possible. Injuries could change things significantly, but there's no reason this D can't be special and one of the best. It will be hard to compare to previous D's though, because the rules favor the offense so much more than in the 80's and 90's.
