League’s reaction to Tom Brady testimony not as glowing

Those paid to exonerate Patriots quarterback Tom Brady were wowed by his performance at Tuesday’s appeal hearing, #asexpected. Those who suspended him in the first place weren’t. #Asexpected.

Per a league source, Brady simply reiterated his denial regarding any involvement in or knowledge of whatever it was that John Jastremski and Jim McNally may have been doing with the team’s footballs. When pressed on certain facts relating to Brady’s potential knowledge or involvement, the answers were regarded by some in the room (i.e., some who aren’t paid to exonerate Brady) as not entirely credible.

But one source talked, and it's apparently positive for Brady. Someone told ESPN's Adam Schefter (http://espn.go.com/boston/nfl/story/_/id/13137796/appeal-hearing-new-england-patriots-qb-tom-brady-ends-10-hours-testimony?ex_cid=sportscenterTW) that Brady was "very genuine, earnest and persuasive," and he addressed "every issue" from investigator Ted Wells' report.

Personally, if I was Brady, I'd have ended my case with a charming soft shoe and a bunch of children dancing with joy. Then again, maybe he did.

He's getting off...I'm convinced that whatever is good for TV ratings and jacking up costs for commercials the NFL will do. Tom on the sidelines for the NFL Opening Night with Jeanine Garopppolo starting at QB might hurt ratings and sponsor reimbursement from Papa John's ****ty pizza and Lexus. Tom gets no suspension, integrity be damned.

I'd argue Jimmy G on the field, and Tom stewing on the sidelines Week 1 would boost ratings.

I agree. But this will be true for only one game. Not for four IMO.

Then Troy Vincent and Ted Wells should just get up and leave, since their work means nothing after Bob Kraft waves his hand and the lapdog Goodell eats a liversnap.

There is no way Goddell doesn't hold up the ruling. They spent $5M on the Wells report, if he changes course now he is basically saying he screwed the pooch. He almost lost his job over a year ago due to the Ray Rice issue, there is no way he reverses himself.

It really isn't relevant anyway. This is all a dog and pony show before the court case. After he rules, Brady will take the case to court and get an injunction. The thing will drag out in and Brady will play the season, and the case will probably be decided in the courts next offseason.

The science on the Wells report is shaky at best, probably worthless. The league's case really comes down to a couple texts from a couple low wage employees from 10 months ago and Tom's failure to turn over his phone. But I'd agree with Ginger, Goodell will look even dumber than ever if he admits his case is no where near strong enough to merit 4 games. So he may offer two. It's questionable in my mind whether Brady would take 2 games. I lean towards no. If they can get the federal court to hear the case (and that's a big if, after all the players negotiated the system they have through collective bargaining) then I think Brady wins and the entire suspension gets thrown out, probably after the season is over. If that happens you'd have Goodell really looking bad, Brady walks and the Patriots still have this enormous team penalty. Pretty amazing situation.

this is really straight forward.

Brady refused to cooperate with a league investigation into allegations of cheating. the patriots only partially cooperated. Goodell can't let it slide. if he does he might as well resign as commissioner. Because if he bends for Tom, he'll have zero ability to compel cooperation from the next person the league investigates. Simply put, setting aside the science, the testimony, the questionable impact on the game, in the end there is one major issue at play here. That's a player refused to cooperate with the league during an investigation into cheating. If he gets away no one else will EVER voluntarily cooperate with the league again. It doesn't matter if Tom dropped to his knees and gave Goodell a BJ during the hearing. As long as he refused to cooperate with the league investigation the league simply can't let him off the hook. The best possible result for Tom would be the league lowering the number of games for the suspension, and even that doesn't make sense if Goodell wants to remain relevant as commissioner.

BTW: if Tom really is innocent he has the worst legal team in history, because a good legal team would have an innocent man cooperating with the investigation. Since he's stonewalled the league throughout this process, we can only assume he either has the world's worst lawyers or is guilty of this or even worse infractions which have not been turned up yet.

And I would love to see Brady take this to court.

In a court of law, Brady would be forced to give up his phone for inspection.

There would be full disclosure of everything said between him & the underlings that did the deed.

Also, Brady would be subject to perjury charges if he lies under oath.

i'm sure both the patriots and the league have a lot of stuff they don't want out. There is no way this goes to court. the league has a PR issue. Everyone who has a brain can see the patriots have cheated. and most people link that deflated balls aren't the only reason they win. it's because they foster a culture of going over the line to win and for every spy gate and deflate gate that is caught, they have other items not disclosed that are over the line.

in total it gives them the edge.

The league is probably aware of this and can hold it over the partiots. and the patriots can probably hold over goodell's head that they've let it go in the interest of getting a dead fanbase over the years (with a lot of people in the new england region) fired up about football. it has helped every team. even the little buffalo bills went from $700MM to $1.4BN in 5-10years.

But the PR has shifted. the pats fans have crawled back into their little hole accepting that what people have said for years is becoming obviously true. and they realize they don't really love football. they just liked winning. And the big time fans of football have had enough.

we probably will accept something as piddly as a 4 game suspension and a mark on brady's legacy. this is the cheapest out for the league.

Wait until the " cheaters " chants and boos ring down from the stands during road games.

Sorry NFL but your ability to control everything doesn't work. Perception is king and the bad PR will dissipate only when the fans decide it should.

That would be my guess
Or Goodell doesnt let it get that far. He knows the report wont hold up in court. He also knows that all of the correspondence between Kensil and Blandino will be subpoenaed.

There is a reason why those two specifically left Goodell out of the loop the day of the afccg.

You completely missed the point. Bradys legal team is paid for by the nflpa. Brady didnt hand over his cell phone because the union doesnt want to set precedence. The nfl doesnt have any subpoena power. They sure has heck dont want to set precedence on that.

The whole Brady will have to hand over his phone if this goes to court and then the truth will be known is very unrealistic IMO.

Brady will just say he lost, gave away, traded, had stolen, whatever the old phone and provide a new one with ZERO evidence in it. He's not stupid. This needs to end here no courts involved. The main give away of Brady's culpability is himself. Remember the press conference after this all became a subject ? He told reporters he liked his footballs at a certain PSI, then 3 minutes later in the same PC he said something to the extent that he wouldn't be able to differentiate a perfectly inflated ball from a deflated ball. In a span of minutes he went from specifics about how he wanted the balls to not knowing the difference if they weren't set like that. ****ing liar.

Goodell needs to uphold the punishment if he doesn't want to lose face (more) with the rest of the owners. Everyone knows he's Kraft's lap dog. Bending over for him (again) would be his demise.

Can't the judge issue a court order to subpoena his text history from Verizon/Sprint/whoever? I thought they kept them for a certain period of time before deleting them from their servers for court cases like this.

You have to take that press conference in the context of Morts report that 11 of the 12 balls were 2 lbs of psi underinflated. Which we know now that to be an erroneous report. The nfl could have nipped this entire thing right then and there but they chose not too.

If Brady gets off it'll be another nail in the coffin of the NFL. They'll start going down the slippery slope of boxing, NBA, and the WWE as far as integrity is concerned. Everyone outside of Boston is sick of New England so why won't Goodell let this villain die? Kraft's wishes are going to kill the league.

Brady's credibility and excuses are equally as lame as his form on a waterslide. And his descent is equally fun to witness.

But I can't wait to see all the signs & hear the chants of CHEATER when the Pats* play games away from home.
