New York Jets (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/nyj/new-york-jets) quarterback Geno Smith (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/15864/geno-smith) will miss six to 10 weeks after suffering a broken jaw in a locker room altercation.

Coach Todd Bowles said Smith was hit by linebacker IK Enemkpali (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/16858/ikemefuna-enemkpali) on Tuesday morning.

Bowles said Smith was "sucker-punched" by the linebacker. The quarterback will undergo surgery he said.

Oh Jets, please never change.

But I thought Rex was the cause of all their locker room problems? Or was it Percy Harvin?

The Jets didnt see a hit like that coming, and neither did Geno

But in all seriousness, punching your QB in the jaw in a locker room fight is a sure fire way to ensure that you never play in the NFL again

I think the Jets will do better with Fitzpatrick anyway, so this is really a blessing in disguise for the Jets...not that Fitzy is all that, but he's better than Geno Smith IMO.

But the Bills don't play the Jets until week ten, when Geno should be healthy again. It'll be interesting to see how the season unfolds for the Jets.

Totally outrageous thing for this guy to do, sucker-punch him like that. He'll never get another chance anywhere, and you can bank on it. Deservedly so. I don't see how he shouldn't be criminally charged, either, based on the report.

trey wingo (https://twitter.com/wingoz)✔ @wingoz (https://twitter.com/wingoz)

Ryan Fitzpatrick is only QB since 1970 to start for 5 different teams and not have a winning record for any of them. Jets would be his 6th

The moral of this story is that you don't sign Fitzpatrick as a backup if you want to keep your starter healthy. Here's what happened during Fitzmagic's first year at each of his 6 teams.

RAMS - Starts season as 3rd string, Bulger and Martin get hurt, Fitz starts 3 games
BENGALS - Palmer gets injured, Fitz starts 12 games
BILLS - Edwards gets hurt, Fitz starts 9 games
TITANS - Locker injured week 4, Fitz starts 9 games
TEXANS - Fitz wins starting job but loses it after playing poorly, Fitz lasts 3 games as a backup after Mallet gets injured
JETS - Geno gets punched in the face by teammate, Fitz takes over as starter

How little respect does Geno have in that locker room that a) He got pucnhed in the face and b) It appears there was nobody around to defend him. OR even after the fact for that matter

I think Geno's mouth has a lot to do with how he's perceived in their locker room and around the league. He's always talked a big game - which there is nothing wrong with that IF you can back it up. Problem is he's never backed up his mouth and he keeps talking anyway.

It wouldn't surprise me if his mouth got him into the incident to begin with and the fact he runs his mouth probably has rubbed his teammates and new coach wrong. Put that on top of the fact he's supposed to be an NFL QB and team leader who makes a decent salary people within that organization likely think he should set an example and just pay back the fringe player 600 bucks. 600 bucks for Geno should be nothing, but to a fringe player it's kind of a big deal.

Based on his mouth and his anti-leadership actions in this situation, players around the league talk, coaches talk, GMs talk, owners talk...the fact that he's shown nothing on the field he may be basically blackballed in the league after this. Who wants an immature punk at QB who can't even play the position?

Yes, including seasoned guys who would know what they are talking about...Cris Carter, Revis etc... I respect Willie McGinest (despite his being an ex Pat). He said sticking your finger in somebody's face in the locker room is a recipe for disaster and that if anyone did that to him he he would react. While IK obviously made a poor decision McGinest went so far as to say that he'd rather be next to him in the trenches (presumably instead of Geno). The word is that Geno actually dared the guy to hit him, which of course he did. Given that players facing the media usually tend to be diplomatic about things like this the consensus seems to be decidedly against Geno.
I guess the Bills were spot on when they avoided him for character issues. Now if they only had an eye for QB talent.
