    Preseason Backup QB Watch

Since our current QB situation is a disaster at best, figured it would be somewhat advantageous to look at how others teams backup QB's are doing in the preseason in case somebody who has some potential gets cut or stashed away on a practice squad that we could potentially look to steal.

Here are some of the interesting performances thus far:
    Ryan Griffin - New Orleans - 10 of 17 (58.8%), 112 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
    Kirk Cousins - Washington - 12 of 14 (85.7%), 154 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT
    Dustin Vaughn - Dallas - 12 of 18 (66.7%), 106 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT

I'll try and update this throughout the preseason.

    - - - Updated - - -

Also I realize that there is a 0% chance that Cousins gets cut but he's technically a backup so that's why I included him in the thread.

    Re: Preseason Backup QB Watch

It's going to be even worse to acquire a back-up who would have to learn our system.
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?"
"Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet.
You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times."
    It was all
true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach.
He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can
mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

I'll be keeping an eye on the NFL's most expensive backup in 2015 -- Chase Daniel.

Should be keeping an eye on Aaron Murray and Tyler Bray. They're both going to have to play pretty well for the Chiefs to dump Daniel.

          Jimmy Clausen looked surprisingly solid.

          Byrd.

Alex Tanney was 3/3 for 38 yards.

He is the anti-EJ - accuracy is his thing. Remember this?

                On that note (Titans)...

The Titans are committed to Marcus Mariotta. All their back-ups fared well:

Zach Mettenberger was 8/11 for 129 yards (11.7 average - compare with Bills QBs)
                Charlie Whitehurst was 5/5
                Alex Tanney was 3/3

I watched the Fins Bears game & their 3rd string QB impressed me.

He was throwing a nice accurate ball all over the field.

I think he looked better than Matt Moore in that game.

I've always loved that video. Maybe my memory is wrong but didn't we have him first as an UDFA?

Also wouldn't mind them getting Mettenberger from the titans, but I think at this point we have what were going to have. I don't think they're going to make another move for a QB

Edit: Looked it up, we didn't. Don't know who I was thinking of

                      You're not crazy.

                      We gave him a tryout.

You're both correct. We had Tanney into our Rookie Minicamp for a tryout right after he went undrafted.

                          More good QB performances:

                            Brett Smith:
The Riders' terrible season continued on Saturday with their seventh straight loss, but if there was one silver lining, it might have been quarterback Brett Smith.

Also I really liked Smith coming out of college, thought he was a diamond in the rough type of an option late on Day 3. Problem was he needs lot of time to develop and not sure any NFL team had that. CFL made a lot of sense and I'm glad he's getting a shot to play.
