Study: Rex has had worst QB play since the merger

Grantland takes a look at which head coaches haven't been helped by their quarterback play, taking into account a multitude of factors. Rex Ryan is at the top (bottom?) of this list, and they say he is likely to stay there after 2015

1. Rex Ryan: 21.2 percent ANY/A below league average
Teams: New York Jets (2009-14)
Notable Quarterbacks: Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith

You already know all about everyone involved in this blurb. The best season a quarterback has had under Ryan was in 2010, when Sanchez improved to an ANY/A that was 5 percent below league average. Otherwise, his quarterbacks have been remarkably, consistently dismal:

Year Primary QB Team ANY/A vs. League Avg Rank
2009 Mark Sanchez 3.96 -29.9% 27
2010 Mark Sanchez 5.45 -5.0% 21
2011 Mark Sanchez 5.12 -13.2% 20
2012 Mark Sanchez 4.29 -27.7% 30
2013 Geno Smith 4.18 -28.9% 32
2014 Geno Smith 4.75 -22.5% 30
And while hope springs up around the league in August, there’s little reason to think the combination of EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, and Tyrod Taylor will improve things for Ryan in Buffalo. They’ve been surprisingly effective in the preseason, but almost everyone looks better against vanilla defenses. The dark truth remains: Ryan will likely still be no. 1 on this list if we run these numbers again next year.

Thanks, Doug Whaley! For keeping Rex's record intact!

Another loser post full of negative crap.

WagonCircler doesn't know how to win because all he knows is how to lose in life.

You're a loser, WagonCircler.

Drag everyone else down to make yourself feel better.

How is this exactly calculated?

I'll use a former Bills coach as an example...

Dick Jauron had Shane Matthews, Cade McNown, Jim Miller, Chris Chandler, Kordell Stewart, Joey Harrington, JP Losman, Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick.

That's just as bad, if not worse, than Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith.

I hate stats like this. What does any of this even mean? You have to be a master in trig to understand some of these stats people come up with.

WagonCircler has no magick.

He has no spirit. Instead of speaking for himself he lets a website speak for him.

Completeley uninspiring.

At least come up with your own bag of original crap instead of regurgitating what grantland.com barfed up lately.

Another circle jerk for the WagonCircler, full of what other people think and too afraid to speak his own mind because the roast beef curtains control his lips.

Meow.

I prefer the clumping cat litter.

Oddly enough, I see this article as vindication for Rex as a head coach. He's had an inordinate amount of success saddled with that QB garbage. I've got high hopes that Tyrod/Manuel should be substantially better than Sanchez/Geno, so we should be able to go somewhere, especially with Roman. Then again, high hopes spring eternal before the season starts...

The formula Barnwell is using penalizes heavily for turnovers and is compared to the league average. Sanchez and Smith were more turnover prone compared to their contemporaries.

It would take balls to do that?

All it that would take would be slapping a pair out of your mouth.

That does not even make any sense. You can't even insult people very well.

No truth that's why he turned down Atlanta. "Nah I'm going to Buffalo, they don't have a QB"

Maybe he chose Buffalo because we have arguably the best front 7 in the NFL and he wants to combine that with his scheme?

Does that mean that Rex is bad at developing QBs or does that it mean that he is a fine coach because he managed to get depp into the playoffs with garbage at QB, given to him by his respective GMs?
