The on-again-off-again saga of Falcons defensive lineman Ellis Johnson took a couple of more turns Monday, when he told an acquaintance late in the day that he was going to retire rather than report to Falcons training camp Thursday.
Earlier in the day, various media outlets reported that Falcons officials had been in contact with Johnson and his agent, David. I. Levine, and were ''optimistic'' that Johnson, 29, would be in camp later this week.
By Monday evening, Johnson apparently changed his mind again and -- before calling Falcons officials -- called Indianapolis Star reporter Mike Chappell, who covered Johnson when he played for the Colts from 1995-'01.
