So it seems Whaley has spread the cap hits out over this deal by effectively giving Dareus two signing bonuses. One this year (which apparently we don't have to pay until December, oddly enough) and another $7 million he'll earn next year which then itself spreads out over the balance of his contract. It's the reason why his dead cap hits stay so high for the first four years of the deal.

Next year Whaley has his work cut out for him, though I got the distinct feeling from this year that he doesn't care. If he doesn't make the playoffs, he's fired and its the next guy's problem. We have about 148 million in committed cap without accounting for Glenn, Bradham, Cassel, or Incognito. The last two may play themselves out of the discussion, but it does seem like Glenn is gone.

Sadly Glenn is gone and that's tough because he's so solid at LT. I'd keep him over Bradham. I feel like linebackers are up there with running backs.

I agree, but most teams feel that way so he's much more expensive to retain.

Those numbers seem pretty manageable considering where the cap is likely to be in 4-5 years. I was expecting his cap hits to be a little larger, but it looks like his extension is about $96 million over the additional 6 years, as opposed to the $108 million figure that was originally being thrown out there.

Don't pay too much attention to the total value of contracts. Agents and teams have a million ways to inflate those. Focus on the money that's paid out in the first few years and guaranteed regardless of performance. This is a very big contract in that regard.

Total value becomes less significant when you see inflated base salaries in the final year or two of the contract with little to no guaranteed money, but that's not really the case with Dareus. Either way, the cap hits are what they are based on the guaranteed money and prorated bonuses. They could renegotiate at some point, but that's not likely to happen for at least 4-5 years. And with the way it's set up at the end it may not be a necessity to re-work the deal in the final years like you see with those inflated contracts.

I agree that it's a significant contract because anytime you include that much guaranteed money, you're essentially stuck with that player for better or worse based on the potential dead cap hits. So I think it's safe to say that Dareus isn't going anywhere for at least 4 years regardless of performance or suspensions, or whatever. I just like the way it's set up because it doesn't include any crazy years where things get out of whack, and his cap hits decrease when he turns 30. Whether or not he plays under those terms in the final couple years we'll have to wait and see, but like I said, it all seems pretty manageable to me as far as mega-deals go. I was expecting his cap hits to be larger.
