View Full Version : Bills sign QB Josh Johnson; Cut K Billy Cundiff

Per Mike Rodak:

The Bills have signed QB Josh Johnson, which indicates that the Bills might have some concern about the health of Tyrod Taylor. Rex Ryan said Tuesday that Taylor was "banged up" and "sore." The Bills cut K Billy Cundiff to make room for Johnson.

Sounds like there's a legit chance that EJ will start Sunday.

Huh ? Taylor is sore, not in intensive care.

Oh, great! EJ!!!

Can we please have another play where we send our QB out in the flats to catch a pass and get torpedoed by a corner?! That was pure feckin' genius.

Frickin' Josh Johnson, another Rexy favorite.

Could partially be for intel. He was on the Bengals during pre-season.

Could be worse, we could have traded for Josh Johnson before someone else cut him.

Well, it's kind of funny you mention that because Indy just cut Johnson to make room to sign Marcus Thigpen. We could have traded Thigpen for Johnson, which seems like we did with cutting the players. lol

I don't expect EJ to start, but Tyrod obviously isn't at full strength. His ankle might feel a lot worse today than it did on Sunday. We'll have to see how practice goes, but it definitely doesn't sound like he's guaranteed to start.

Someone has to throw the ball in practice. If Taylor gets time off Tuesday - Friday and EJ is working with the starters someone needs to take EJ's scout team snaps.

If EJ starts I'm prettys sure that Watkins calf is going to get worse awfully quick. No one wants to go out there and get there head ripped off over the middle.

Tyrod will start.

Johnson I think is just a reaction from Rex that if Taylor does get injured at some point he wants to be able to have a similar player to put in if needed.

He saw the value in being able to just run for it when all else fails.

The Bills have a PS qb that probably takes the scout team reps. Even if there's a small chance that Tyrod can't go, they need to be prepared for that situation. They can't really wait until the end of the week to see how Tyrod is feeling and then sign a qb a day or two before the game.

curious move indeed. so does kid rock do kickoffs now? little surprising they are willing to give up that yardage when they carried an extra kicker for two seasons just for that. dont need the arm so the cincy intel might be a factor but how much do you really get out of that anyway. curious

What intel do you need on the Bengals? I could give them that for free.

They're gonna run Giovanni Bernard around 15 times in the game and he's gonna end up with 70+ yards. Dalton will throw the ball deep to AJ Green, when he's not throwing the ball to Eiffert in the seam. They'll score 21+ points doing this.

That's the Cincy offense.

I thought the same thing once the alert came up on my cell phone. "We're signing Ray Rice and breaking Hernandez out of the can next," was the thought that went through my head.

Good roster move. Letting Gay go for Cundiff was already a head scratcher to begin with, and Cundiff didn't exactly put the ball into the fifth row of the endzone seats on his kickoffs against Tennessee. Tyrod got beat up some and will need an emergency QB on the roster, especially with this miserable OL that has him running for his life it seems on half the pass plays.

Carucci is saying Tyrod has been hurt and they had to make a move. Apparently they checked the passport status of QBs before the London game. He says the Bills tried to sign Simms from the Atlanta PS, but he turned them down because he likes the situation with the Falcons.

So much for giving Carpenter competition. Now he's got job security. At least until next week when the Bills sign Lindell.

I can see why the Bills took Carpenter off kickoff duty. Since they moved the tee to the 35, his TB% went from 57% in '11 to 46% in '12 and then off the radar at 40% in '13. Yeesh...he better get some hang time.

I wish we had kept Dustin Hopkins who we drafted out of FSU in '13, 6th round. He's kicking for the Skins. Just one missed FG so far (from 53), 7/7 on PATs, 17/20 KOs were TBs. All for just $480k.

Since it seems that every NFL run back on a kickoff ends up with a yellow flag against the return team is this an all together bad thing.

Most drives I watch in other games start inside the 20 on run backs

Having Gay on the roster just for kickoffs is what? That's right, it's gay. The guy sucked at kicking fieldgoals too, from what I've seen.

Last week, Cundiff performed the kickoff duties. How bad can Carpenter actually be at kickoffs? I can't imagine he's that bad...we'll soon find out. Like EricStratton just alluded to, I'm more shocked when a holding or illegal block in the back penalty ISN'T called on a kick return than when it IS, anyway.

A lot of these RB and QB moves have made no sense to me, but we've been over this. I don't mind repeating that I don't care for Boobie Dixon at RB EVER. Now we have Josh Johnson? What, Cassel was too white for them? I understand the money aspect and Cassel is not a world-beater at any stretch, but we needed that depth IMO. Gimme Brown or Freddie any day of the week before those scrubs we saw on Sunday at RB.

He was nursing an injury through most of the pre-season as I recall. Even if they thought he could handle it they might not want him to.

I don't think the kickoff thing is that big of a deal because we have one of the best gunners in the league in Marcus Easley. Now I understand the argument that the other team can't return a kick for a touchdown if every kick is out of the back of the end zone, but I'm not worried as long as Carpenter can put the ball near the goal line.

Yeah, which is what Carpenter used to do and is more than capable of. I actually liked it when Carpenter used to kickoff because we seemed to get a lot of stops inside the 20. I think the only reason they decided to go with a kickoff specialist was because Carpenter got hurt trying to make a tackle on a kickoff. He was having an awesome year kicking FG's and they felt he was too important as a FG kicker to risk getting him hurt on kickoffs.

I know that it might be minutia, but our best ST Easley is out this week with an injury. It seems like he made 3 out of 4 special teams tackles on the team. Hopefully Carpenter can get it into the end zone this week.

Between Carpenter's mediocre kickoff and the godawful coverage, the Bengals regained field position at every turn.
