Sometime Thursday, the Raiders' medical staff closely will examine the spine and neck of onetime starting defensive end Tony Bryant to determine his medical fitness as an NFL player. The diagnosis doesn't figure to be very surprising.

Anticipating the injury that sidelined the pass rusher for much of the 2002 season might be career-ending, the Raiders planned accordingly. They set their sights on two big-bodied pass-rushing replacements with two of their top five picks in April's draft, setting up one of the most intriguing competitions in their 23-day training camp.

At 6-foot-6, 280 pounds, former Colorado defensive end Tyler Brayton was one of two first-round selections, a huge presence who can get to the quarterback (seven sacks for 51 yards as a senior) and stuff the run (11 stops for minus-59 yards) along the edge.
