I agree with Whaley on this.

Had Cassel started last week, I don't think the Bills would have put up 21 points.

With this defense, 21 points on offense should be enough.

I totally agree with Whaley's, "longer shelf-life," comment. Cassel is near the end of his career and EJ Manuel is young.

If Cassel started last week, I think the score would have been a lot worse.

Cassel got the majority of snaps in training camp to prove he was better than EJ Manuel and Tyrod Taylor.

He didn't make a single play all preseason that made you say, "Wow, that was awesome!"

Taylor and Manuel made plays, Cassel did not.

Can anyone recall a single play Matt Cassel made this preseason that was worth remembering?

That's GM speak, nothing more, nothing less.

The Bills are 3-3, which is right about where I thought they'd be at this point in the season.

Take away 3 or more horrible calls against the Bills in the Giants game, and they're 4-2.

The depth of the team is being tested right now, along with every other NFL team.

During the preseason, fans love to say, "But he's playing against backups!"

Many of those backups are starting all over the league this Sunday.

lol. fans are weird. i see nothing wrong with what whaley said, i think its right on the money. ej is overall as good as cassel right now, will continue to improve, has many more years to play, and has a higher top end than cassel ever could have. keeping cassel in that situation would have been dumb, especially when they need a kickoff specialist and especially now with all the injuries and desperate for roster spots. they got something in trade for a guy that 99% of the time would have just been cut so they even added value in the process. id do that deal every time

this idea that whaley went rogue on cassel is also absurd. note how everyone just ignores this ringing endorsement from roman:

He certainly has the backing of offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who told reporters on Thursday that "EJ's got the type of makeup" to follow in the footsteps of the league's "elite quarterbacks."

getting criticized is part of the gm job and he deserves some of it. but not on this one. weird indeed

Uttering inanities about the "shelf life" of a player is a first.

Compounding it with statements like "As you can tell, we've cut a lot of people we thought would make our team better." That's not "GM speak"; those are the words of a self-loving idiot.

this is just pouncing on a simple misstatement when ppl are looking for something to criticize. in context with the rest of his comments he obviously means theyve cut ppl of both high and low draft status in order to make the team better. so he said it awkward, big deal. happens all the time, im sure you do it all the time, we all do. cherry picking those moments as some kind of indication hes lying or incompetent is just silly

There is nothing silly about noting Whaley's words. He is the GM of business endeavor of which there are only 32 participants.

We've seen outrageous trades of draft picks, desperation-style qb moves, recent dissention in the ranks over strategy, an inability to sort out the qb position, probably a first in keeping two kickers, throwing megabucks for a rb whose previous team gleefuly dumped him, spent picks on OL players that aren't - so far - worth a bucket of spit.

Whaley is headed back to Pittsburgh scouting, sooner or later, with someone who knows better making the decisions. It wasn't Nix here, nor Ryan now.

so you're taking half of that equation out and then you get a fifth-rounder in '17, which you can jockey in the draft this year, or have two picks in the fifth round in '17. So you're going to get another player with a longer shelf life and a bigger upside

Not like the other picks he wheeled and dealed might have affected his 5th round steals in 2017 with upside and shelf life, like Bryce Brown for a 4th (it wasn't a 5th !) and such.

Don't let him wheel and deal in any more drafts.

I'm not for Cassel before EJ, but Cassel didn't even play in the preseason. How can you ask that question? And when he did, he completed almost every pass. You make no sense.
