Is This The Last Year For Mario Williams In A Bills Uniform?

Mario Williams has a $20 million cap hit in 2016. His dead cap hit would be $7 million.

IF the Bills trade Mario Williams in the 2016 NFL Draft, does the dead cap hit count?

He doesn't fit in Rex Ryan's defense for that kind of money.

Rex is going to create his defense in the image of himself, not Jim Schwartz.

I'm anticipating a serious defensive overhaul in 2016.

Take a look at this incredibly long list of 2016 NFL Free Agents:

Tracking the status and signings of all NFL free agents.

The Bills will have to resign Richie Incognito next year.

If Tyrod Taylor continues his excellent play and takes the Bills to the playoffs, that's another big contract.

Nigel Bradham is also a free agent in 2016, but that's kind of trivial.

Gilmore has an $11 million cap hit in 2016.

The Bills are in serious salary cap jail.

The Bills have $119,385 of salary cap space to work with in 2016.

Freeing up $19.9 million worth of cap space would help.

Check your math. You didn't subtract the dead cap for Mario. It would be more like $12.9 million.

      That's this year, $13.9 million.

      Next year is $7 million.

IF the Bills trade him, does the dead cap money count?

19.9 cap, 7 million dead, 12.9 savings in 2016 if booted. Yes, dead cap is on the books.

Yes might be the last we have him, or he renegotiates for longer and less with a guaranteed chunk.

I would say a restructure would be far more likely than him just being released.

Athletes like restructures, it gives them more guaranteed money up front.

$12.9 million in savings if the Bills cut him, with a $7 million dead cap hit.

I get that. Thanks for clarifying.

But what if he gets traded?

Does the dead cap money count if they trade him?

            Anyone know?

Yes, it counts. It's basically money paid and cost deferred from previous guarantees and bonuses.

I think this answers my own question, but I need the help of Billszone interpreters to understand it.

Mario Williams had a $19 million signing bonus.

                  Is it, 'unamortized,'

What the hell does that mean?

Brush up on your capology skills in anticipation of the various moves the Cowboys will make in an effort to get under the cap.

                  Player cut or traded
If a player is cut before the end of his contract, the entire unamortized signing bonus money (the remaining prorated bonus money) accelerates immediately and counts against the 2013 salary cap.
The same rule applies when a player is traded or picked up by another team off the waiver wire. The signing bonus remaining on the player's contract accelerates into his old team's salary cap in 2013. The new team takes no cap hit whatsoever.

Then how in the hell are they going to sign anyone next year?

Sure, the salary cap will go up, but not nearly enough to sign Incognito and a quarterback too.

Somebody's got to go if the Bills want to pay the water guys next year.

Best to think of it simple.

Dead money is the salary cap space a team must allocate to a particular player who has been cut. It serves as a device to ensure that every dollar a team has paid players is eventually allocated to that team's salary cap.

If we already gave him any money, it will always count one way or another, even if deferred. His bonus was spread out over the contract, next year that's the 7 million deferred that we already paid him.

Now if you want to get more complex, you can unamortize your amortization, or amortize your unamortized which will leave you either mortized or entirely dismortized meaning you need to remortize pretty darn fast or your unmortized which means you need to reamortized mortizations reamortizing the unmortizement to unmortise the reamortization you mortized. You just don't want to go there and best you think of it as money we paid him will always cost us.

                          That was seriously funny!

After a good laugh, thanks to Mace, the big question remains.

How can the Bills sign anyone next year without getting out the cleaver?

                          Who gets chopped?

It means it all hits in one year. If it were amortized it would be spread out over a number of years.
