The Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Oakland Raiders in the Super Bowl, but the Raiders bested the Bucs for the marketing bucks.
The Raiders led the NFL in sales of licensed merchandise for the second consecutive year while the Bucs' No. 2 finish was their highest ever. The recently finalized rankings cover fiscal 2002, which ended March 31. "Our two Super Bowl teams were winners on the field last year, which translated to their positions atop the merchandise rankings," says Mark Holtzman, NFL senior vice president of consumer products.
Winning is good. It boosted the Bucs from 10th place while NFC runner-up Philadelphia vaulted to sixth, its best showing since 1990. New England, a year after its Super Bowl win, secured a ninth-place finish and its first foray into the top 10 since 1995.
