W e need the Seahawks.
There, I said it.
I know it doesn't sound sophisticated or uptown, but it's the truth.
Seattle's training camp opens today. Rookies report. Fans report. And in Portland, we're shut out.
We need the Seahawks camp here someday soon.
We need the buzz of having NFL players in our city. We need thousands of fans staying in hotels and eating at our restaurants over three weeks. And we need the image boost.
We need the Seahawks.
We need them as a diversion.
We need them to help our economy.
We need them because we are the No. 25 market in the country and we could use them.
But today the Seahawks will open camp in Cheney, Wash., where they will unload trucks filled with equipment and prepare for the 2003 season. Meanwhile, we are 340 miles away, left to wonder about, well, yes, next year.
