Good things come in all shapes and sizes. How else do you explain that the two most prolific scorers among this year’s field of draft-eligibles are the "Mutt and Jeff" combination of Alex DeBrincat and Julien Gauthier?<iframe name="dapIfM2" width="1" height="1" id="dapIfM2" src="about<strong></strong>:blank" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"></iframe>
DeBrincat — all 5-7, 160 pounds of him — has really been held back by the departure of last year’s running mate, Connor McDavid. His scoring pace has dipped all the way down to an absurd 33 goals in 30 games.
Then there’s Gauthier, the 6-4, 224-pound behemoth who resembles Godzilla as he steps on ant-like defenseman around the Quebec League. The panicky villagers have been fleeing in terror as Gauthier has bagged 29 goals in his first 30 games.
Here is Red Line’s preliminary identification list of the top draft eligible prospects for the NHL’s 2016 Entry Draft in Buffalo on June 24-25.
Rising :
Logan Stanley (Windsor) — Humongous, mean, and now … he can skate. Who knew? The physical tools alone give him huge upside.
Noah Gregor (Moose Jaw) — Quietly having an outstanding, breakout season. Overshadowed by standout teammate Brayden Point so he doesn’t get the top ice time, but his all-around game is really starting to take off.
Stepan Falkovsky (Ottawa) — Not so much rising as appearing out of nowhere.
Dawson Davidson (Kamloops) — Has the puck movement and offensive skills that are increasingly in demand from the modern defenceman.
Julien Gauthier (Val-d'Or) — Huge horse is a dominant scoring machine, plus he’s picked up a half-step on his stride. Explosive combination of size/skating/scoring.
Matthew Phillips (Victoria) — If he rises any futher the top of his head may eventually touch the table. This munchkin could be the next dynamic small man success story.
