Bills planning to cut Mario Williams this offseason

The Buffalo Bills plan to cut pass rusher Mario Williams in the offseason, the Associated Press reports. Williams has two years remaining on his six-year, $100 million contract.

Mario Williams is playing his final game in Buffalo on Sunday.

The Associated Press reported Thursday that the Bills plan to cut the defensive end this offseason, per an unnamed source with direct knowledge of discussions.
    Every game, all season

The report meshes with NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport stating earlier this month that the disgruntled Williams could reach the free agent market. There is a "clear, fundamental disconnect" between coach Rex Ryan and his defensive line and Williams might be at the heart of the trouble, Rapoport said at the time.

Not surprising. Best of luck Mario, hope you land with a coach that will best utilize your abilities and recognizes what your strengths are.

            Not surprised.

Since day one I felt the best part of signing Mario was the fact that Buffalo was willing to pay the big money to sign a premiere free agent.

It made us relevant and a real player in free agency.

            Mission accomplished.

I don't like that we are gutting the defense to adopt Rex's **** scheme but Mario way under-performed and is no longer worth the money.

Yup. That really is the #1 thing he brought to the table. Otherwise, way overpriced for his production, which never lived up to the "super mario" nickname where he was supposed to disrupt and dominate games.

He'll get a chance somewhere else to be pass rush specialist, not an every down DE. And that will work for him since he already takes off 50-60% of the plays anyway. Has ever since he got here. The issue is $, I'm very curious what he'll get, since any team to pay him $19M should be declared clinically insane.

he'll be in NE next year. happily playing OLB, and rolling up 20 sacks in an LT like season.

Cause that's just how buffalo rolls.

Normally I'd say yes, but....there's zero chance they will pay $19M as it's not the "patriot way". So, either Whinio takes a pay cut and decides he wants to win before he's done, or he shops himself to some stupid team willing to pay it out. Honestly, my guess is the latter. You just get the feeling he's in it for the $$$, not the love of the game.

i would have said the same thing about a number of the vets they signed for well under market value. I think the appeal of winning a superbowl is still pretty good to 30+ yo players with tens of millions of dollars in the bank.

He'll go somewhere else and play his natural 4-3 DE role, get paid around 10m per season and put up his normal 35 tackle 11 sack season.

....and take half the snaps off. But, at $10M, I'd almost be ok with that. Almost.

May as well get it out of the way. I'm already resigned to losing Kyle also, and needing to rebuild the defense again in a couple years anyway once Ryan is booted.

                          Inevitable is inevitable.

All talent, not much heart. Took a DC like Schwartz to bring the best out of him .

Oh well. We have IK to replace him anyways.

Re: Bills planning to cut Mario Williams this offseason

Mario should have never said that he wanted to play as the Will linebacker.

Rex did use Mario Williams at defensive end this year, and tried using both schemes early in the season to satisfy the players.

Didn't work. They went 4-3, more than people are willing to admit.

What I don't understand is how people blame Rex Ryan for the defensive falter. The players failed to adapt to a new system.

Pettine and Schwartz had two good defenses, but the window of opportunity closed on them in the Black Hole of Oakland last year.

2 years is a long time to dissect a defense.

An NFL defense can be "easy and not complex," for only so long before the Derek Carr's of the football world carve them up.

Coaches are still trying to figure out Bill Belichick's defense. It's like an unspoken foreign language with NSA encryption.

That's the kind of defense Rex is trying to implement, because you can't beat Belichick and the Patriots without knowing how to play their game.

The Bills and Rex Ryan need to knock the Patriots off of the AFC mountain, and the only way to do that is by learning how to speak Rexanese.

Ryan has the defensive clout to be given the benefit of the doubt.

Roman went to a Superbowl and how many NFC Championship games?

Mario had no respect for these coaches from the start, and that's puzzling.

He publicly stated that he wanted to play Will linebacker, got his opportunity and then *****ed about the defense.

Mario Williams is a World Class defensive diva with colored contacts.

I used to think he was HoF material, but his selfishness this season shown by his complete lack of effort is nothing short of disqualifying.

No coach wants a player that gives up.

                              "Buh-bye"
