It's hillarious how anyone would want him gone.

What is the argument for extending him? That he has improved the "talent" on the roster? Consider:

1. Is it hard to improve the "talent" on the roster of a perennial loser with lots of cap space?
2. How is his track record for hiring coaches?
3. Has he put together a playoff team in his tenure?

It's hilarious how anyone can give him any kind of glowing endorsement.

This team is no closer to the playoffs today than they were in Dick Jauron pick a year tenure.

1. Not necessarily. But he's done that... Pass
2. He's hired a coach? Please review the details on who hired who... Push
3. This is a playoff roster and he has no say over the football coaching side of it. Pegula's design... push

Look at who he has retained, signed, drafted, added, and even let go. His record speaks for itself. The Tyrod move alone should get him an extension... A street free agent added who became the 7th ranked QB as a starter with a very small contract? Name any other prior GM who got so much from so little investment. Lot's of 1st round picks traded, used for QB's, has-been's that never-were's...

The team is being proactive. If they win Super Bowl 51 they'd have to pay Whaley millions more if they let his contract expire after the 2016 season than if they extend him now. They know they have to save $ somewhere in order to pay Tyrod after next season.

Yeah I don't know. Going 8-8 after going 9-7 because we overpayed for talent that was mostly injured, fumbling the o-line and well ending up 8-8 just doesn't impress me. Just means we're loaded with injured talent that doesn't produce results, some useless "talent" on the o-line and finished 8-8. Getting the right people in the right places at the right time for the right coach to use them would impress me.

Maybe he'll wheel and deal more picks next year for short term dazzling individual performances, or you'll end up seeing his man EJ throwing to his man Gragg with a rusher in his face who blew past his man Kouandjio who his man Felton could have blocked if he was on the field.

Maybe we'll get to 8-8. It's all Rex's fault, next coach will do it right after Whaley helps pick him, I mean they do trust him to help pick a coach, yeah, so the next rebuild will help use all his talent and re sign everyone forever and ever with his wily Newsomeness and keen eye.

Nah. Whaley is a football Regier, married to his picks, and Pegula will be sorry if he extends him before seeing what happens next year.

Work of prior Bills GMs getting alot of value for little investment:

Used fourth round draft pick to select Andre Reed (HOF receiver)
Signed NFL free agent Bryce Paup for modest money (4x pro bowler, defensive player of the year)
Signed undrafted college free agent Pat Williams for peanuts (3x pro bowler)
Signed undrafted college free agent Jason Peters for peanuts (8x pro bowler)

"You have one more year to fix this thing."

"How would you like to sign on for a few more years?"

Mixed messages much?

Very common to extend someone when there could be a performance termination in their future. Otherwise Whaley can just call it in now.

Ironically Pegula did same thing with Sabres.

Keep in mind, Pegula gave Darcy Regier an extension in early 2013 and fired him less than a year later:

It's hillarious how anyone would want him gone.

you can make an argument that he's missed on the 2 most important positions on the team since he's been here. Head coach and franchise QB . I think the team can get better under Rex but not good enough to make superbowl .

But with that being said, I like Whaley. Other than sticking with EJ, he's found very good players.

I agree; while i'm not a huge fan, you can't deny the team has gotten more talented with him here then at any time since Butler or possibly TD was the GM

QB and Head coach - the two most critical positions in the modern NFL - and Whaley blew it; and not just blew it - was one of the most die hard members of the EJ Manuel fan club - even though the football world pretty much views Manuel's draft as a huge mistake.

Why extend him now when he has 1 year to make the playoffs? Is Peg really worried about losing him to another team?

Because there's no truth to that

What is with this organization and paying people who haven't earned it... yet letting people like Schwartz (who totally earned it) go elsewhere?

I don't get it either. Is his contract guaranteed like HC's are? If so this makes absolutely no sense.
