View Full Version : How Does This Team Improve...?

Even if the Bills find a way to re-sign Glenn and Incognito...they will have essentially no money remaining to sign UFA's.

That leaves the draft. We've heard numerous times this season from coaches and players how "complex" Rex's system is to learn...So even if the Bills draft an "impact" defensive player in the top 3 rounds, can we really expect him to contribute and make this team better?

Mario Williams was horrendous this season, but who replaces him? Quentin Coples? Gross.
Percy Harvin missed most of the season, but he was very good when he played. Who replaces him? Greg Salas? LOL
Kraig Urbik isn't the greatest offensive lineman in the NFL, but he's a good veteran backup. John Miller is hurt every week, and is a borderline NFL starter. Who replaces him?
Leodis McKelvin missed most of the year, but was able to step in and play. Who replaces him to fumble punts and kickoffs?

Looking at the opponents next season, and knowing what we're most likely already looking at...can we just go ahead and fire Rex now?

Ronald Darby disagrees with you... He thinks it is very possible for the Bills to draft a defensive player in the 1st 3 rounds next year and that player can contribute and make the team a bit better

If Rex can somehow manage to get this defense back to a respectable level and the offense continues to improve we should be able to compete next season.

Baring injuries to key players of course.

I can think of 5 spots minimum, 7 maximum, out of the starting 11 on D where a draft pick could probably come in and make the team 'better' since they are 'moving forward' with Wrecks' scheme.

they need a game changing LB to run the defense. you get a freak of nature LB who can cover and blitz, and you have the guy who makes Rex's defense viable.

While picking my daughter up from school today Mike Franceca (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/audio/mike-francesa/) is going on and on and on about how LBers have become of secondary importance in the NFL. He's right. He was talking to a guy who wanted the Giants to sign Eric Weddle. MF (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/twas-night-christmas-mike-francesa-article-1.2476241) says that in order of imprtance drafting these days only QB, edge rushers, CBs and o. tackles are the prime positions. And occasionally WR. Safety, LB and DT - not as important and don't command as much money as those other positions (usually).

And specifically he said about LBs - the reason their stock (as a position) has dropped is because none of them are on the field for 3 downs anymore.

Urbik is terrible. Maybe he's a good backup in checkers but he's brutal at football.

I watched Salas from the stands Sunday. He was open quite often.

Emotionlessly, in no particular order, we need :
- a better coverage DT who can also be a 2 gap nose tackle
- a backup QB who can win games when Taylor goes down
- a younger cheaper end who can do coverage better than Mario Williams and rush once in a while
- a Ryan defense safety who can stop the run and blitz better than he can cover because that's why you have linemen
- a younger Manny Lawson
- a cheaper, special teams fullback who can play fullback too
- a field goal kicker who can kickoff
- a holder for field goals who can face the laces the right way every time
- a more durable special teams WR who can play WR too
- a Percy Harvin type who can play more games and not get hurt, and isn't named Percy like you couldn't see that one coming
- a linebacker who can cover and stop the run like a safety who can cover better than the run stopping safety mentioned earlier
- a right tackle who can block people
- a guard who can play a lot of games and block people, depth or starter depending
- better clock management
- refined offensive playcalling where they can call more than one play at a time
- better gatorade management, those guys were looking electrolyte challenged to me sometimes
- someone who knows how to charge the headsets and helmet mikes
- someone who doesn't doze off on replay challenges
- a less aggressive team chaplain imparting the gentle faith to everyone but the coaching staff between critical plays
- a better driver for the home field injury cart, that guy swerves wildly before he gets his comfort zone
- a less obvious silent snap count
- a partridge in a pear tree in bronze next to the Wilson bronze

It's not going to happen.

On offense, the Bills need to address the right tackle position, and maybe left tackle too if they can't sign Glenn.

Ronnie Stanley or Jack Conklin could fill the hole(s).

On defense, the Bills need to address the safety position, and the departure of Mario Williams.

Weddle looks to be out of the equation in free agency, so I wouldn't be surprised if they took up Leodis McKelvin's offer to reduce his salary and play him at safety in 2016.

That would make a lot of sense for the Bills, and McKelvin. A lot of cornerbacks move to safety later in their careers, so keeping McKelvin looks to be the best move. He actually played very well at safety this year considering it was his first go at it.

Aaron Williams has been giving positive feedback about his neck injury as of late. I think he'll take that first hit and be good to go for 2016.

Just in case Williams decides to retire, the Bills still have Corey Graham to play safety, and Rambo.

The Bills are good at safety, especially with Donnie Henderson coaching them.

Replacing Mario Williams with a player that actually wants to play football in 2016 should not be difficult to find.

I think Rex could have gotten 5 sacks out of Maybin this year, out of retirement.

The first two picks in the draft look like an offensive lineman, and defensive lineman in my crystal ball.

The trebuchet is 6'7 245 lbs named Paxton Lynch. He's projected to be drafted between round 1 or 2.

Whaley is a best player available kind of GM. If Lynch is on the board at pick 19, Whaley's going to take him.

The Bills need a good backup plan for Tyrod Taylor's upcoming make or break season.

No such thing as having too many good quarterbacks.

Next year we play the much tougher NFC West and AFC North (both divisions have 2 play-off teams each this year) rather than the much easier NFC East and AFC South (both division winners are 9-7) that we played this year.

Given the above and the Bills salary cap situation plus draft position, it is virtually impossible for the Bills to improve their record next year.

Sorry to be a party pooper.

so many things need to happen to honestly attempt an answer to a question as deep as this one...

How does this team improve?

it's up there with "what is the meaning of life?" , "Chicken or egg?" , and "Is a hotdog a sandwich?"

The question of how this team improves is a legitimate one, but when I was watching our games, I never felt like we were losing because we lacked talent. I asaw us losing because we lacked cohesion, discipline, and sensible strategy and those things can improve without spending money.

Is Rex the guy to improve it? That's a legit concern though.

Sorry to break it to you guys, but this team will fart around with 6-10 to 8-8 as long as Rex is still here. Mark my words, we WILL NOT have a winning season with this douchebag here. We may even fart with 4-12 if the talent dips or injury bug bites hard.
