Someone posted this last year, forgot who, step up for another thanks. Had endless fun with it right up until draft day. Already having fun with it again though it's way too early. At the very least it helps me get familiar with prospects.

It's too early. I keep taking the best kicker in the 4th round, panicking he won't be available next.

I'm noticing so far I always (past the kicker fixation) go after Su'a Cravens (OLB listed but a OLB/safety hybrid in the 2nd), De'Runnya Wilson (tall WR) and Cardale Jones (in the 3rd and 4th, depending), and Nile Lawrence-Stample (DT/NT) later.

First round I'm always going after ILB Ragland if available, or OT Conklin.

This kicker is worthy of a fixation... I don't see him making it to round 4. Especially with the PAT changes

I can't think of a draft I've looked forward to less than this..because I know how its going to be. 4 of the 1st 5 picks will be "3-4 D" scheme guys...a RB and a late round steal OT. so..this really means little.

And..I didn't get to watch much college football this year ,but anyway:

I used the Fanspeak list..and I question whether some will be there..

1. Miles Jack, LB UCLA. Unlikely to be there, but there he was, so it was too good to pass up. Now...use him as a 2 gap DT, Rex...or maybe as a CB..but don't complain about lack of talent, Buffoon.

2. OT JOHN THEUS GEORGIA Rex and Rob whined about not taking a SS or 5 Tech DE ...but its time they learned to coach beyond their own egos.

This is another stab at fixing the RT position with a 4 year SEC starter. The position was bad last year, and it was bad the year before and no talk of getting a 7th round steal changes that. I'm falling away from the 6'8" 340 lb RT's. Teams are sending quicker and quicker outside rushers to that side. Your RT needs some athletic ability.

3. C RYAN KELLY Not big on his size, but big on his playing ability. John Miller, who I like, has to get better as a G, he just does. Even with a run oriented team, you can't pass block that poorly and hope to make it in the NFL.

So....enter the Rimington award winning center who hasn't given up a sack in 2 seasons. Am I beginning to question Bama Olinemen in the NFL? Yes. Do I prefer that Miller gets better? yes. But it does open possibilities. If Kelly is better as a center, Wood can be moved to guard, or ...Kelly can move to guard.

4. WR RASHARD HIGGINS COLORADO ST - better 2014 than 2015, but lost his coach and his QB. He works out ...great. If not..its like most other 4th round picks.

5. DT VERNON BUTLER LOUISIANA TECH - there's your fat NT, Rex...now let Dareus and Kyle Williams 1 gap, twist, stunt and go back to doing what they do best..ya moron.

6. TE TYLER HIGBEE The Hilltoppers. Not likely he is there in the 6th. But 2 athletic TE's is a nice option. Unless one of them is a gang banger and ends up murdering people.

ParanoidAndroid

1. OT Taylor Decker
2. DT Austin Johnson
3. LB Scooby Wright III
4. DE Sean Oakman
5. OLB Yannick Ngakoue
6. WR Cayleb Jones

Defense retooled/backed up, the next late-round WR steal and an OT to provide leverage against Glenn.

Drafttek ranking

1) Shaq Lawson OLB Mario's replacement
2) Jarran Reed DE/NT Couldn't believe he was there
3) Su'a Cravens OLB/S starter at safety day one
4)Rashard Higgins WR Looked at Cardale Jones here, went for the reliable WR that's an upgrade to Hogan.
5) Pearce Slater OT 330# goes into the mix at RT
6) Robert Aguayo PK 6th rounder who replaces 2 guys on the team. Can't beat that.

Pretty happy. Three guys that can play Rex's defense. Would have liked to drafted someone at ILB, No one was ever there. Maybe I'd get Brandon Spikes cheap. Also would have liked a QB.

Mace
02-01-2016, 07:41 PM
OK, pre-combine, using CBS, I don't really think it can possibly work out this way, but it's early and I'm having fun. I nearly completely bailed on the offense to load Rex with toys, if he can't use them he needs to leave and give back money or be beaten with sticks and pelted with rocks and garbage.

19: R1P19 DE SHAQ LAWSON CLEMSON : He's there, welcome to Buffalo, Shaq, goodbye Mario.

49: R2P18 DT JARRAN REED ALABAMA : Alrighty then. NT, DE, both ? Say hello to Orchard Park and get nice neighbors.

80: R3P17 WR RASHARD HIGGINS COLORADO STATE : "Hollywood" Higgins, snarky, capable possession receiver, go home Roman, that's it for you.

114: R4P19 SS JAYRON KEARSE CLEMSON : Big developmental guy with a boatload of maybe for just about everything if he puts on some weight muscle, have fun, Rex.

144: R5P17 ILB BLAKE MARTINEZ STANFORD : Smart, capable, new MLB, welcome to the bench, Preston.

174: R6P17 OLB CURT MAGGITT TENNESSEE : Tank. Quick tank. Dance with Mr. Martinez, Mr. Maggit, move around and do your thing, Kearse and Martinez will do the rest.

If Rex can't make a top 5 defense with these guys, Whaley's chosen o-line can't hold up their end, and Roman can't hold up his end like he did this year, fire everyone and start over and too damn bad you spent too much money on them because your team blows.

Pre combine Draftek :

19: R1P19 OLB MYLES JACK UCLA : He was there, no brainer.

49: R2P18 S JAYRON KEARSE CLEMSON : Ryan's future SS of glory.

80: R3P17 DE BRONSON KAUFUSI BYU : Every good defense needs a Phil Hansen who is better than Phil Hansen.

114: R4P19 OT JOE HAEG NORTH DAKOTA ST : Well, he was available, end this right tackle wondering right now.

144: R5P17 G JORDAN WALSH IOWA : Is he a guard, is he a center ? He's goodbye to Urbik.

174: R6P17 DT NILE LAWRENCE-STAMPLE FLORIDA STATE : Nose tackle. Violent hands. Got to like a nose tackle with violent hands.

156: R5P17 CB V'ANGELO BENTLEY ILLINOIS

I quickly noticed there were only 3 fullbacks, so I took all of them to screw the rest of the league. After I got them all, put that in your pipe and smoke it Belichick, I went after nothing but the lowest rated CB's, because you can never have enough of them and I'd surely find a sleeper to back up Darby & Gilmore. One of these guys should be able to punt also in case Schmidt gets hurt at an inopportune time. Got a guy named Fabian too to sing rousing songs before practice. Also got a V'Angelo and an Artie Burns (use some ointment for that) ! I wanted Taveze too but ran out of picks too soon.

A starting ILB and possible NT in the first two rounds. A road-grader guard, a big WR with ball skills. I resisted temptation in the third round, and first pick in the fourth, but couldn't pass up Aguayo as he was still just sitting there at the comp pick (sorry Mace). Bradberry I actually took under the notion he can be moved (and is probably a much better fit) for safety. A project QB, and hard-hitting OLB. Didn't get a DE or OT, but I'm OK with that after filling a bunch of other holes.

Post combine - CBS (I think the CBS is harshest and most likely)

19: R1P19 OT JACK CONKLIN MICHIGAN STATE : A mashing mean tackle to end the RT follies for 5 years.

49: R2P18 OLB SU'A CRAVENS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA : Hybrid OLB/safety with range, made for a Ryan defense.

80: R3P17 DE JIHAD WARD ILLINOIS : Undervalued impact player imho, having a killer offseason. Won't miss Mario.

118: R4P19 QB CARDALE JONES OHIO STATE : Well, here's another one in need of tuning, mobile tank with rocket arm = next maybe.

140: R4P41 ILB BLAKE MARTINEZ STANFORD : Dependable lb with flashes of impressive.

157: R5P17 DT NILE LAWRENCE-STAMPLE FLORIDA STATE : There's the rotational 2 gap NT who can play some football.

193: R6P17 G JOE DAHL WASHINGTON STATE : Former LT and dependable swing lineman who can step in wherever if needed.

219: R6P43 OLB CURT MAGGITT TENNESSEE : Underrated (imho) lb with range and ability for inside/outside as needed.

I could never bring myself to take Aguayo (sorry Yardrat), without being sorry I didn't take someone else. I took 3 lb's thinking I took two and a strong safety to butch up Ryan's D. Couldn't resist Conklin in the 1st or Dahl in the 6th to add some stable to the OL, and I think Martinez, Cravens, Jihad Ward, and Maggit (Maggit like legit) could have impressive careers in the right defense. Ryan's ? Ryan's.

I still think you get a kicker and WR from udfa, and as many replacement rb's as you need.

Glasgow can play any of the three interior positions.
Bradberry, again, being moved to safety. Don't think he has enough agility to play corner.
I have real problems finding a DE no matter whose list I use...the good ones that fit go early, and the later ones are too light, probably better fits at OLB.
Disappointed I didn't land an ILB, but couldn't pass up Lawler, Higbee in the fifth, or Reader at the end of the sixth.

I've grabbed Lawler, Reader and Glasgow a few times. James Cowser is not a bad middle rounds DE option (not a great one either, but think stand up DE) or Jihad Ward if he's there in the 3rd because he never will be in the 4th, and I occasionally fall back on Jordan Walsh g/c from Iowa near the end of the draft to add some depth. I'm always looking at de's they figure will add some weight reliably (because they have) to avoid Maybins. More than a few Hughes type hybrid ends, but I'm thinking Ryan moves Kyle to end role in 3-4 anyway, when not tackle in 4-3.

In most of my sim drafts I still like getting Su'a Cravens as hybrid olb/ss, or make a play for Jayron Kearse, or Miles Killebrew if he lasts too long, and I go after Blake Martinez often (he's one of those who plays better than he seems on paper).

Best thing I think about this draft, and the most optimistic I'll get about Ryan, is that there are a ton of guys he can move around with deadly effect if he's really all that.

YardRat
03-19-2016, 03:01 PM
The problem I seem to continue to have with CBS is once you get into the fourth round there are a plethora of offensive skill positions stacked up (as far as their rankings, anyway) and you really have to reach a little bit to get to any big guys or defensive front seven.

I'm still having major issues with the combined board. It's not that I can't find anyone to take, but keep finding too many people to take. I click the OK for a pick and notice someone else still available, adjust my philosophy, try again, half the people are gone but there's a different trove. Click OK, notice someone else still available....

YardRat
03-27-2016, 06:50 PM
My 'issue' is I'm starting to zero in on guys in certain rounds, or passing on others because I know somebody else from the same position I'd like is probably going to be available the next time up. I've passed on Peake a couple of times, for example, because I know Lawler will be there later.

You'd mostly call that BPA on your board, but the composite is freaky and random. I've passed on some guys knowing they will be there later after multiple drafts, to run into some where they aren't. Heh, I suppose that's what happens to real GM's and is why we aren't them. I can scrap a draft as a dork up and move on to the next try, they can't.

Ok, that's it, dork up or not this next draft is the one I post.

I tend to zero in myself, and have developed names I tend to home in on, depending on the round.

DE - Emmanuel Ogbah, Jihad Ward, Shilique Calhoun, Bronson Kaufusi, James Cowser (see him as hybrid DE/OLB), Shawn Oakman
DT - Jarran Reed (see him as hybrid NT/DT/DE), Vernon Butler, Niles Lawrence-Stample, DJ Reader
OLB - Leonard Floyd, Su'a Cravens (see him as hybrid OLB/SS), Joshua Perry, Kyler Fackrell, Yannick Ngakoue, Curt Maggit (see him as hybrid ILB/OLB)

ILB - Reggie Ragland, Scooby Wright, Blake Martinez

OT - Jack Conklin, Joe Haeg, John Theus, Alex Lewis, Willie Beavers
OG - Vadal Alexander, Landon Turner, Spencer Drango, Joe Dahl, Jordan Walsh (see him as a G/C depth)
QB - Cardale Jones, I'm on the fence about Kevin Hogan after our last Stanford QB
TE - Glenn Gronkowski (see him as hybrid TE/FB/H-Back, if he's there late), Jerell Adams (if he's there late)
WR - Rashard Higgins, Kenny Lawler, Charone Peak, De'Runnya Wilson

I'm not disagreeing with Treadwell's value or skill level, but when he's available I always wonder :
- Do we throw enough balls for Watkins & Treadwell in a rushing offense to justify spending a 1st in this draft on what will essentially be tits on a bull ?
- Is Taylor enough of a passer in a rushing offense to maximize 2 number 1 WR picks who are going to get cranky about how many passes they see ?
- Is there someone there we would miss more if we didn't get him ?

I think if we had a passing offense and a gunslinger QB, he's make perfect sense, but it would greatly distress me to see him running around a lot for nothing while opponents keep tearing us up for 8 yard runs and slicing us with 15 yard passes to TE's while our pick is running around alot on running plays or routes where Taylor can't find him in the middle of the field.

That's no slam on Treadwell.

I used the new KC board for the first time, some of the rankings seem a little wonky to me. Olinemen went early in rounds, and in streaks. A few times I was looking at a slew of WR's and CB's and had to scroll. Was really able to beef up the front 7 though with Ragland (ILB), Butler (NT), and Ward (DT/DE). Lawler was BPA in the third, and couldn't resist snagging Peake also in the fourth. Got a safety prospect in Bradberry, and oline with Glasgow and Young on Day 3.

Taking safety off my list. I think recent pickup White is going to be the depth if SS Aaron goes down. Ryan system exp, big man. I'm thinking Ryans are with safeties like Gailey is with QB's, want vets.

Of course, since then my simulator drafts using the redoubtable CBS big board have rocketed into the universe of improbable. Last two tries I got Shaq Lawson in R1, and Leonard Floyd in R2, and then Jared Goff in R1, Paxton Lynch in R2, Cardale Jones in R4, and Kevin Hogan in R5, figuring the rest of the league can come begging me for QB's.

OK, here's my 'Let's pretend Wrecks was never hired' mock.

A few assumptions...

An offensive-minded head coach was hired, bringing along a competent OC and offensive staff. Schwartz and the defensive coaches were retained. Last season's cluster**** of free agency (Clay, Harvin, Felton...maybe even Taylor) never happened. Incognito, re-signing Hughes, maybe even the Shady trade still did. Some of the money wasted on offense was given to Spikes and he stayed. The team is still running a Wide 9 on defense, Mario re-structured this off season and stayed. Last year's draft stays the same. The defense is still mostly dominant, but Searcy still walked.

Team needs = Oline, TE, QB, WR, safety and defensive depth/eventual replacements.

If Conklin is there (one of the top three OT's) you take him.
Henry may be the top TE in the draft, good replacement for Chandler.
Hargrave is the eventual replacement for KW.
Prescott, with or without Taylor, is a good risk/reward gamble in the fourth (Goff, Wentz and Cook were gone in the first 15 picks, no thanks on Lynch)
Tuerck--b/u guard center, Woods eventual replacement.
Bradberry switches to safety.
Wilson adds a WR with size for depth.
Williams depth/special teams...eventual replacement for Brown on the outside when he moves inside to replace Spikes.

19: R1P19 OT JACK CONKLIN MICHIGAN STATE : Enough said.

80: R3P17 WR RASHARD HIGGINS COLORADO STATE : Stevie Johnson with route discipline works for me.

117: R4P19 QB CARDALE JONES OHIO STATE : Still think he's the best potential QB in this draft, howitzer arm, big as a tank, mobile, and freed from Ohio State's bootleg.

139: R4P41 DE BRONSON KAUFUSI BRIGHAM YOUNG : Smart, has time to learn, can spell Mario and develop. I think he's going to like the wide-9.

156: R5P17 DT MATT IOANNIDIS TEMPLE : Smart, worker bee, rotational, eventually replaces Kyle.

192: R6P17 S TYVIS POWELL OHIO STATE : Schwartz uses safeties like centerfielders. Single high safety is just his cup of tea.

218: R6P43 G JORDAN WALSH IOWA : Future Urbik, from Iowa, guard/center.

This will be one of my last sim drafts, I'm pretty locked into my reasoning and players by now. The general tone will be skilled, flexible raw players to be taught or built. I think that's where they are going and it's what I want for what they want.

19: R1P19 OLB Leonard Floyd Georgia : He's a younger, better Manny Lawson who can learn with Manny Lawson. In my perfect world they'd get a pure OLB like Joshua Perry, and a pure DE like Emmanuel Ogbah or Jihad Ward, but I'm thinking they have their 2nd necessary 3 down LB in Zach Brown and they want another Hughes in the form of Lawson, and that's Floyd if he's there.

49: R2P18 CB Xavien Howard Baylor : Best suited to be a press corner and built like a safety. I think Gilmore is going to get hurt, if he doesn't they can wave goodbye to him after this kid has a year under Ryan.

80: R3P17 G Vadal Alexander LSU : A run game masher to step in if Miller gets hurt again or train to replace Incognito down the road.

117: R4P19 WR Kenny Lawler California : Needs some weight for the pro game, excellent ball skills, give him some time in the weight room, groom him behind 2017 FA Woods, and enjoy the plays the man will make.

139: R4P41 DT D.J. Reader Clemson : A big, versatile DT who can play multiple positions and needs some technique. Who better to learn from than Kyle and Dareus ? He can move.

156: R5P17 OT Willie Beavers Western Michigan : Has the tools, needs refinement. Is Kromer all that ? If he is, this kid could end the Henderson/Koundjio sweepstakes and put them back to depth where they belong.

192: R6P17 ILB Blake Martinez Stanford : A solid lb, an effort guy, a guy who will surprise you, and someone ready to roll 3 downs a pop if the Browns aren't all that and maybe even if they are.

218: R6P43 S Jayron Kearse Clemson : Sitting there in the 6th, with his size and possibility, Ryan's love of safeties and formation roles, if Aaron Williams gets hurt again, he'll lose his job. Probably will anyway in a year if this kid can learn.

-For the love of Cookie, I didn't think Conklin is there at 19 or I'd grab him surely, I ruled out Jarran Reed as a better 4-3 DT prospect, ruled out Ragland because of the Zach Brown signing, ruled out Darron Lee because he's not a Lawson type so perfectly as Floyd is.
-I just can't throw a pick at a QB with the choices available at each slot.
-I just can't go too early or too late on a WR or CB because the quality for WR is either wasted on a rushing offense, or the quality plunges on cb's
-I'm thinking they want trainable guys, putting priority on athletes over polish because this staff is not going anywhere

I'm thinking this is one of those rare drafts that can give us 8 future starters, "can" not "will" and these guys are close to my best bets on potential who can also make immediate effect if needed, obviously with growing pains.

It's a shame they don't have a final sim draft big board with the players ranked by draft order, for retrospect. Then again, maybe it's not a shame, I'd be upsetting myself daily and beating dead horses for a year.
