CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- A Clemson assistant football coach says he violated NCAA rules by running with a wide receiver he was disciplining.

Wide receiver coach Dabo Swinney said he made red-shirt freshman Kelvin Grant run 35 minutes last week for failing to attend study hall sessions.

"It never crossed my mind that was a violation," Swinney said.

"I certainly am guilty. I definitely ran him," he said.

Swinney told The Greenville News he ran with Grant, a violation during the summer. It is interpreted as a coach having an impermissible summer workout with a player, he said.

"The intent of the rule is to keep coaches from being out there training their players," he said.

Swinney doesn't expect a major penalty.

Clemson compliance director Rebecca Bowman would neither confirm nor deny the school is self-reporting the incident.

"We never talk specifics about any kind of violation," Bowman said. "I will tell you that if any of our actions are inconsistent with NCAA rules, we will review the matter and report it as we always do."
