SEATTLE (AP) -- University of Washington officials aren't saying when they'll announce their new football coach or who it will be, but they're hoping he can attend the Pac-10's annual football media day in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

"Cody Pickett will be there as our player representative," UW Athletic Department spokesman Jim Daves said Friday. "And it's our intention to have our head coach there if he has been named at that time."

Last month, UW Athletic Director Barbara Hedges placed offensive coordinator Keith Gilbertson in charge of supervising the football program's day-to-day operations.

Hedges announced June 12 that Rick Neuheisel would be fired for violating NCAA rules by taking part in neighborhood gambling pools on the past two NCAA basketball tournaments. She also said he wasn't forthcoming when first questioned by NCAA investigators.

The coach has insisted he was forthcoming with NCAA investigators. He also defended himself with an e-mail from the school's compliance officer, which said taking part in off-campus gambling pools would not break NCAA rules.

Neuheisel filed an appeal, which Hedges rejected on July 1.

The UW and Neuheisel agreed on Thursday to waive a scheduled hearing, ending "the administrative process" in the football coach's firing. Procedurally, it was Neuheisel's final opportunity to air any objections to the rejection of his appeal.
