Rangers add toughness by signing Simon

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New York Rangers added some toughness Friday, signing unrestricted free agent left wing Chris Simon, who has accumulated over 1,300 penalty minutes in his career.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

It is the second offseason signing for the Rangers, who also inked veteran defenseman Greg de Vries as they try to snap a franchise-worst six-year playoff drought.

Simon fits into the mold of Sandy McCarthy, a valuable member of the Rangers the last couple of seasons who can score and defend his teammates. Simon had 12 goals and 148 penalty minutes last season.

The 31-year-old Simon spent 2002-03 between Washington and Chicago. He was dealt early in the season to the Blackhawks in a trade that sent Michael Nylander and two draft picks to the Capitals.
