The league Board of Governors unanimously approved Las Vegas as the 31st NHL franchise. Over 13,000 deposits for season tickets were received for the new team which will begin play in the 2017-18 season and play at the new T-Mobile Arena. But...the price to join: $500 million.

Also, Quebec City's expansion application was deferred; Commissioner Gary Bettman said that was primarily due to the value of the Canadian dollar.

I would have preferred relocation to expansion but I think Vegas is a good idea.

The NHL has struggled in non-traditional hockey markets (basically anywhere outside of NE, PA and Great Lakes/border states) but Vegas has no other major pro sports teams. The people will flock to it and it'll bring new fans to the game.

But it won't be locals that go to the games for the most part. It will be like Carolina and Atlanta to an even greater degree. The crowds will be all for the visitors.

And I'm sure Penn & Teller and Celine Dion will take in a few games.

To some degree, sure. But the locals have no other options for pro sports so I think they will embrace it.

I disagree. I think most people attending games will be people who get tickets from like casinos and such for free. The games will be filled, buy not by diehards

They will be filled for the first year or two. Then the novelty will where off.
Outside of the NFL I don't think any league can flourish long term in that city.

NHL sets expansion draft rules...

Protected Lists
* Clubs will have two options for players they wish to protect in the Expansion Draft:
a) Seven forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender
b) Eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goaltender
* All players who have currently effective and continuing "No Movement" clauses at the time of the Expansion Draft (and who to decline to waive such clauses) must be protected (and will be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).
* All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).
Player Exposure Requirements
* All Clubs must meet the following minimum requirements regarding players exposed for selection in the Expansion Draft:
i) One defenseman who is a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.
ii) Two forwards who are a) under contract in 2017-18 and b) played in 40 or more NHL games the prior season OR played in 70 or more NHL games in the prior two seasons.
iii) One goaltender who is under contract in 2017-18 or will be a restricted free agent at the expiration of his current contract immediately prior to 2017-18. If the club elects to make a restricted free agent goaltender available in order to meet this requirement, that goaltender must have received his qualifying offer prior to the submission of the club's protected list.
* Players with potential career-ending injuries who have missed more than the previous 60 consecutive games (or who otherwise have been confirmed to have a career-threatening injury) may not be used to satisfy a club's player exposure requirements, unless approval is received from the NHL. Such players also may be deemed exempt from selection by the League.
Regulations Relating to Expansion Franchise
* The Las Vegas franchise must select one player from each presently existing club for a total of 30 players (not including additional players who may be acquired as the result of violations of the Expansion Draft rules).
* The Las Vegas franchise must select the following number of players at each position: 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goaltenders.
* The Las Vegas franchise must select a minimum of 20 players who are under contract for the 2017-18 season.
* The Las Vegas franchise must select players with an aggregate Expansion Draft value that is between 60-100% of the prior season's upper limit for the salary cap.
* The Las Vegas franchise may not buy out any of the players selected in the Expansion Draft earlier than the summer following its first season.
The 30 NHL Clubs must submit their Protection List by 5:00 P.M. ET on Saturday, June 17, 2017. The Las Vegas team must submit their Expansion Draft Selections by 5:00 P.M. ET on June 20 and the announcement of their selections will be released on made on June 21

Hopefully Moulsen will be gone long before the expansion draft.

Uhhhhh...no. (Uh huh huh huh....:D ) Actually, T-Mobile Arena's capacity for hockey is 17,638.(Yes, JATM beat me to this, but it must be repeated.)

MTS Centre in Winnipeg STILL holds the mark for fewest seats at 15,294.

BTW, per the rules that the Detective posted, here's who the Las Vegas team CAN'T select from the Sabres:

Eichel. Reinhart. Nylander. I think Risto is off the board, too(but can't be sure).

Ya know, this obviously doesn't matter anymore, but I've always felt that in terms of building an expansion team, they should plan ahead more on the actual team. Try and follow along on my idea. So Las Vegas begins play in 2017, and will participate In next June's entry draft. They should have participated in this year's draft.

I can already see eyebrows raising. Follow along.

They should have been awarded a team six months ago. This allows them to build a front office. When an expansion team comes about, they also have to build a farm system. With the emphasis on Vegas being competitive right out of the gate, that vision should be long term, not just for their inaugural season. So here's my idea.

Las Vegas gets the last pick in every round from 2 through 5. This allows them to build a prospect pool, albeit likely weak. Why? Most picks continue on with their amateur careers for a season or two anyways. None of those players would likely be in the AHL next season anyways, and the odds of them being in the NHL are virtually non-existent. This allows the expansion team to burn a season of AHL in eligibility on a year the team doesnt play anyways. This allows those prospects to join the AHL a year earlier and help the farm and the team overall. This also makes Vegas an active franchise despite not actually playing yet. Vegas could trade picks or prospects (so long as they are not playing in North American pro leagues like the NHL or AHL. Must be junior players or overseas prospects.) And since the picks are the last in every round, the prospects taken are mostly marginal anyways.

Anyways, just an idea I've had for the past few years. Flame away if ya want
