Could have sworn this thread existed, but I guess not. Anyways. I figure a one stop thread for smaller stories would be good. So to start off, the sabres are moving a preseason game from rochester to Penn state cause blue Cross isn't up to snuff.

Sabres may be trying to move evander. It was a gamble, and his game is great. But he has no desire to grow up.

I have no problem with taking the risk, and it seems wise of murray to say, look, this didn't work out, let's move on with it. Seems very proactive at this point. I like that

Getting someone to take on his pay is going to be challenging, I'd suggest an optional late round pick just to cut bait.

chances are, no one will take him, and the sabres will keep him. *shrugs*

maybe he will finally wake up, but i thought that after the all star game thing.

I don't think there is anyway Landeskog is a part of anything. Maybe Duchesne but not the captain. Either way with either of them, it is a terrible trade for Colorado.

Sportsnet is reporting that D Jake McCabe has re-upped with the Sabres for 3 more seasons.

The deal is worth $4.8 million overall; Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports breaks it down thusly: next season, $1.25 M and then $1.775 M the next 2 seasons.

The Sabres released their Development Camp roster(it'll be taking place at HarborCenter starting next Wednesday; the Blue & Gold Scrimmage will go next Saturday at 1pm). On the roster: the top 3 2016 draft picks(Alexander Nylander, Rasmus Asplund and Cliff Pu, along with East Aurora native(and teammate of Nylander at Mississauga)Austin Osmanski. Justin Bailey is in the mix, too...along with Amherst native Frank Hora(who plays for Kitchener of the OHL). Also of note: Ryan Mantha of the OHL's Niagara IceDogs will be there too.

Citing information he heard from an agent, former NHLer Georges Laraque told WGR radio in Buffalo (http://www.wgr550.com/Laraque-on-WGR-Sabres-trying-to-trade-Evander-Kane/22797023) Thursday that the Buffalo Sabres (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/teams/buffalo-sabres/) are trying to trade talented forwardEvander Kane (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/players/evander-kane/504252), who is the subject of a police investigation (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/police-reports-outline-complaints-sabres-evander-kane/).
"It seems now they want to pull the plug on it," Laroque said. "I don't know if you could give that guy away with all his baggage."

There's a few other signings on the Sabres front, most of it Amerks-related...

*They picked up 2 defensemen: Justin Falk, who played last season for the AHL champion Lake Erie Monsters(what, you thought the Cavaliers were the ONLY Cleveland-based team to win a title this year? :D ) and Taylor Fedun, formerly with the Utica Comets. They both signed 1 year, 2-way contracts.

*And...just in, they also added Mac Bennett(ANOTHER D-man; he played last season for the St. John's IceCaps)and F Daniel Muzito-Bagenda(who played last season with the Mississauga Steelheads)to 1-year AHL contracts.

I don't know. He would have likely played the whole year last year with Buffalo, but had an injury prior to. It's a risk, but it's forward thinking by management. They're hedging he will be a major piece going forward and will be under value when the sabres are ready to contend and major players need pay days

He looked good last night. Kinda a throwback in some ways, but can skate and pass. His skating was a HUGE question mark when he was drafted, but it has become a strength. Good for him. At worst, it's not a huge cap hit if he fails to live up to his potential

Eric Comrie's debut in goal for the Rochester Amerks was a smashing success Saturday, as the Buffalo Sabres netminder made 34 saves to steal a 3-2 win over the Toronto Marlies in Coca-Cola Coliseum.

Comrie, who has not appeared since suffering a knee injury while playing for the Sabres Nov. 16 in Ottawa, was in the first game of his conditioning assignment.

The Amerks were outshot in the game, 36-13, but Comrie stood tall to earn First Star honors and lead Rochester to its sixth straight win. Comrie stopped 27 of 29 shots over the final two periods.
Rochester improved to 17-9-1-1 to pull without four points of Toronto for first place in the AHL North.

There's gonna have to be a trade. I dunno if you can do this, but I guess I'd ask Levi's camp if he's for sure gonna sign at the end of the season, get his answer, and maybe trade Anderson at the deadline to a contender who needs a goalie. In the meantime, carry 3?

As the trade deadline approaches and the Sabres are on the outside edge of a Wildcard spot, they are getting mentioned in a lot of rumors. Timo Meier (https://www.hockey-reference.com/players/m/meierti01.html) might be the biggest move at the deadline. And, yes, the Sabres were mentioned as a good fit for the power forward in the Athletic.

Shayna Goldman of The Athletic: The chatter about Timo Meier going somewhere reached a fever pitch already. However, it seems to only be intensifying. While it becomes abundantly clear, he is being moved. One has to ask, how soon will that be?

He is far from the only target when it comes to San Jose. The Sharks have other players on the market too. However, where could Meier wind up? Fans and experts alike wax poetic about potential destinations. Several make sense and a couple make too much sense.

Meier consistently bring shot and chance metrics to the table at a high level. He creates havoc as a power forward. Teams like that. He possesses multiple runs because of his contract, but also a qualifying offer looms that could total $10 million.

San Jose expects to not contend for a good while and their cap situation dictates a likely move which could come sooner rather than later. Some teams in the mix include the New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, and New York Islanders. Among the three Tri-State teams, New Jersey has the most resources to make a deal work.

Seattle and Buffalo feature the assets to make a deal more palpable for the Sharks. Winnipeg is the one team that needs Meier like New Jersey does, but their cupboard could be a problem. It is safe to say the Sharks’ winger will be a crown jewel piece in this deadline.

Mike Grier has other players that are worth considering.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period: Now, the San Jose Sharks take phone calls on some of their depth players too. Scott Harrington, Matt Nieto, James Reimer, and Nick Bonino may all have different addresses before or on March 3rd.

Now, Bonino and Reimer carry arguably the most value here as far as trade deadline pieces. Both also have a five team no-trade list. Again, good rental pieces with low cap hits are hard to find.

Honestly, can you blame him? Things are looking up for the Sabres now but a) we've been the dregs of the league for a decade and b) things have been looking up at least 3x in the past decade and have never panned out.

As a fan, I'd love nothing more than to be a 20 y/o prospect in this organization. But if I'm being objective about it and I didn't have an emotional connection to it, it's one of the last organizations in the NHL that I'd want to be a part of.

I just saw this. The issue isnt Buffalo, it's that Portillo sees hockey as secondary and wants to go to school as long as possible. He's extremely pragmatic. It was never anything against Buffalo (though things may have changed since Levi is seen as the future) but for the longest time it was simply that school came first.

The Buffalo Sabres' mostly injury-free season at forward took a decidedly darker turn Saturday night when the club placed top-line right winger Alex Tuch on injured reserve.

Tuch is believed to be battling a lower-body injury as he did not play the final 7½ minutes of Friday's 3-1 win at Florida, although he did not leave the bench during that period.

Tuch had a heavy collision at one point in Thursday's game at Tampa and blocked a shot off his foot Friday against the Panthers, but didn't miss any time until the tail end of Friday's game.

The Sabres are expected to recall Vinnie Hinostroza from Rochester to replace Tuch for now but the NHL trade deadline is Friday and an extended absence from a key forward could lead General Manager Kevyn Adams to make a move for a different replacement.

The Buffalo Sabres have acquired defenseman Riley Stillman from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for forward Josh Bloom, the team announced Monday.

Stillman, 24, is averaging 16:06 of ice time with five assists in 32 games with Vancouver this season. The left-shot defenseman is signed through 2023-24.

THAT makes sense, to be honest; Buffalo probably didn't see much of a future for him. They're more focused on Devon Levi as the goalie for the future.

Mind you, that's the SECOND goalie the Kings got today; they traded Jonathan Quick to Columbus in exchange for Joonas Korpisalo and another player. That one surprised me; I thought Quick was going to play his whole career for L.A.

Jakob Chychrun gets dealt, finally....to Ottawa, in exchange for a 2023 conditional first and a pair of second-round picks...a conditional 2024 pick originally belonging to Washington and Ottawa's 2026. The first is 2023 top 5 protected and will be unprotected in 2024. If the Sens make the Eastern final, the Washington pick will become a 2024 1st round pick that's top 10 protected.

All the opposition teams in the NHL are targeting the Sabres emerging stars. Adams was a moron that he built this team with no enforcers. I mean their 4 line id Girgensons - Krebs - Okposo. None are any good at this point and not tough at all. Girgensons and Okposo need to go and Krebs does nothing anywhere they put him. They have no enforcer-types at all. They needed these two young players and they will likely mesh well with the other youngsters this team already has. Good pick-ups. Also nice thing Adams did for Asplund. He dumped Portillo and Bjork for something. He did ok for the team. He looks brilliant going into the draft.

Jost has played extremely well in Buffalo. He's not an issue. Greenway is 6-6 and plays HARD. the offense isn't much, but thats not why you're bringing him in. He's perfect for the bottom 6 and plays tough nosed defense as a forward.

I'm not a huge fan of this language. Maybe I'm overreacting, but. The Sabres have reached out to Devon Levi, and he's "thinking it over"

Am I happy that Levi is in the Blue & Gold? YES.

Honestly, I WISH that he had started with Rochester and not get thrown right into the Sabres' playoff chase; however, I get that with the way the ELC is structured, he wouldn't be able to. Rochester is in the playoff hunt as well, but they are in a MUCH better position to make the playoffs than Buffalo. With the way the AHL playoffs are structured, the top 5 teams in the North Division(the Amerks' division)get in. As of now, they're 4th. Levi should have gone down to Rochester and get acclimated to the pro game.

He had a lot of rough patches and played light against tough teams. He was bolstered by the team around him most nights, although I agree he showed improvement towards the end of the season. He needs more confidence, needs to feel like he belongs in this league. He should have that now. He was still playing timid at times, afraid to shoot the puck on net, thinking he was supposed to pass it to a teammate. He also needs to gain some upper body strength. It's coming. He'll be what he was supposed to. Berniers, however, was lightning right from the start.

See anyone on this list you'd like to add to the defense?

Lance Lysowski of the Buffalo News: Buffalo Sabres GM Kevyn Adams when asked if they’ll be looking at add another defenseman this offseason.

“What’s important is we have a really, really good D corps to start,” Adams answered. “When you think about the age of our guys and what I’ll call them is your core foundational pieces, we’re set up very well.”

Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power will get long-term contract extension offers this offseason.

The Sabres could use another defenseman that could play on a top-two pairing with Dahlin, Power and Mattias Samuelsson.

They’ll have about $19.5 million in projected salary cap space. Finding a ‘cheaper’ option in free agency is an option – someone looking to play Dahlin or Power – but will most likely go the trade route.

Potential trade candidates include Matt Grzelcyk (BOS), Alec Martinez (VGK), Noah Hanifin (CGY), Connor Murphy (CHI), Will Borgen (SEA), Dylan DeMelo (WPG), Tyson Barrie (NSH), Dante Fabbro (NSH), and Sean Walker (LA).

Potential free agent candidates include Matt Dumba (MIN), Connor Clifton (BOS), Ryan Graves (NJ), Scott Mayfield (NYI), Justin Holl (TOR), and Radko Gudas (FLA).

Could get Borgen back? He's doing quite well I've heard. Or Matt Dumba as a free agent.

RHD and has a 20 goal season, might be a bidding war even if he hasn't been top notch. Although that was a few years ago so maybe you can get him on a good deal.

Maybe you know more about Dumba than I do. But the Sabres are looking for a youngish RD, 6' 0" or bigger who is defensively responsible. Dumba fits the bill. I agree there will be a lot of demand for him. He blocked 116 shots this past season. That is what they need.

Komarov was Buffalo's fifth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft

Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR 550) - The Buffalo Sabres have signed another prospect from their 2022 NHL Draft class, inking defensemen Vsevolod Komarov to his three-year entry-level contract.

Komarov was Buffalo's fifth-round selection (134th overall) in this past year's draft after playing his draft year in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Quebec Remparts.

The Russian-born blue liner put up 39 points (12+27) in 69 games this past season for the Remparts, plus eight points (1+7) in 18 playoff games. The 6-foot-2, 182-pound defenseman helped Quebec to a QMJHL championship win over the Halifax Mooseheads and an appearance in the CHL Memorial Cup.

The 19-year-old still has one year remaining of eligibility playing in the QMJHL before he's able to make the jump to the pros.

Komarov is the fifth member of the Sabres' 2022 NHL Draft class to sign his entry-level contract, joining first-rounders Matthew Savoie, Noah Ostlund, and Jiri Kulich, along with third-round pick Viktor Neuchev.

They signed Jack Johnson. If they get a good player in the draft and pulled off a UPL for Hellebuyck trade, I'd be stoked for the upcoming season. Heck, I'm stoked about it anyway. :D

Sounds like the Sabres are letting jost walk

No one cares.

Jost, Hinostroza and Clague all had plenty of time to shine and they didn't. Clague might have a place in the NHL as a 7th defenseman. But neither Jost nor Hinostroza (who got the longer look) have done enough to stay. The Sabres have younger, better players ready to come up. When you can't stick to the roster of the NHL's all-time play-off no-show team, then you probably don't belong in the NHL. And that is what's going on with these three.

3rd line forwards have to be defensively responsible and still score at a somewhat regular pace.

swiper
06-21-2023, 08:36 AM
Lukas Rousek will replace one of the above mentioned forwards....

The 24-year-old led the Rochester Americans in scoring during the regular season with 56 points (16 goals, 40 assists) and added 12 points (5 goals, 7 assists) during the Americans’ run to the Calder Cup Eastern Conference Final. He also played two games near the end of the year for the Sabres and scored his first NHL goal and an assist in two games.

Rousek was a 2019 sixth-round pick of the Sabres in 2019 and is expected to challenge for a bottom-six role with the Sabres at training camp, but even if he does not make the big club, the winger will likely be coming up and back the 90 from Rochester throughout the season as a callup when someone is injured.

One guy older than dirt won't be able to garner meaningful minutes. The other guy a mighty might that is familiar to Granato. Maybe a tougher version of Bryson. This means Bryson, Stillman, and Clague won't be back. Not sure it's necessarily an upgrade.

Connor Clifton got a 3 year deal. The vast amount of the free agents only got 1 or 2 year deals. Clifton led all NHL defensemen in 2022-23 with only 2.34 power play goals allowed per 60 minutes. He led all Bruins in the same stat from 2021 - 2023. Here's what you need to know:

The 28-year-old was renowned for setting a physical tone for Boston and was a fan-favorite player.

He was also +20 last season. He's 5' 11" and 190 lbs. Sounds like a defensive version of Matthew Barnaby.

The next thing to consider is what the market for Pesce would be on the trading block.

Fortunately, there are two examples that are very similar to Pesce’s situation.

In the summer before the 2021-22 season, the Sabres traded defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen to the Flyers on the first day of the NHL Draft in exchange for the No. 13 overall pick, a second-round pick in 2023 and depth defenseman Robert Hagg. Ristolainen, who had a year remaining on his contract, signed a five-year extension with Philadelphia in March 2022.

The return for Jacob Trouba in 2019 was slightly less, but the defenseman had made clear to Winnipeg that he wished to go to the Rangers. New York sent the No. 20 overall pick that year and defenseman Neal Pionk, who had just finished his first full NHL season, to the Jets. Trouba signed a seven-year extension a month later.

If Carolina gives a trade partner permission to talk to Pesce about an extension, the Hurricanes can expect a similar return — a mid-first-rounder, a bottom-half-of-the-lineup player and perhaps a little more.

July 4th Sabres News.... Breaking....

Sabres re-sign defenseman Kale Clague to one-year deal

https://www.buffalohockeybeat.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Clague1-768x512.jpg

Clague was a second-round pick of the Los Angeles Kings in the 2016 NHL Draft. He’s played 91 NHL games with the Sabres, Kings and Montreal Canadiens.

The 25-year-old played 33 games with the Sabres, scoring no goals but picking up four assists. With the Amerks, Clague had one goal and five assists for six points in 14 games.

In addition to the nine NHL defensemen the Sabres have, they also have Clague, Jeremy Davies, Joe Cecconi, Ryan Johnson, Nikita Novikov and Vsevolod Komarov set to play this year in Rochester.

Sportsnet hockey insider Elliotte Friedman reports the Buffalo Sabres have re-signed defenseman Kale Clague to a one-year deal worth $775,000.

Three teams who may be interested in Patrick Kane
Dan Rosen of NHL.com: (mailbag) Patrick Kane’s main priority now is rehab his hip but when he’s looking to sign a contract for next year, believe the New York Rangers, Buffalo Sabres, and New Jersey Devils will be among the teams interested in signing him.

Prediction is he’ll sign with his hometown Sabres.

Rochester has found new assistant coaches(to offset Michael Peca heading to the Rangers, and the other assistant going somewhere else).

Nathan Paetsch and Vinny Prospal are the new duo backing up Seth Appert. (Paetsch has worked with the Amerks before, so it's a return for him.)

BTW, the Amerks have announced their home opener...and as Count Floyd would say, it's "scary, kids....VERRRRY SCARY!" They're opening on Friday, October 13th. Opponent TBD.

Also, pen these days into your calendar:

-Friday, Nov. 24th
-Friday, Dec. 22nd and 29th
-Sunday, Feb. 18th, 2024
-Sunday, March 24th, 2024

Those are the 5 guaranteed home dates for the Amerks.

I fully expect the team to take a step forward and break the playoff drought.

They’re not ready to compete for the Cup. The talent isn’t quite there and there is virtually no playoff experience.

The only thing that may make them Cup contenders is if Devon Levi can be a top 10 goaltender from day 1, and that’s just not realistic. I think he will be a top goaltender in the league, but it’s a process that takes time. He won’t be that good right away.

When Auston Matthews signed his new four-year extension (https://nhlrumors.com/nhl-news-auston-matthews-signs-four-extension-with-maple-leafs/2023/08/23/) with the Maple Leafs many people wondered if players were going to start following his line of thinking and try to max out again on the next contract.

When Matthews did it the first time coming out of his entry-level deal only signing a five-year it was unprecedented. Most players and teams lock up their young stars for eight years coming out of entry-level. But Matthews was a different cat.
Again, nobody foresaw the pandemic and stagnant cap, but still, players never took mid-range deals. Not in this new NHL. And many wondered then if players were going to be following suit. Take less term to max out again. However, most players wanted to be locked up long-term and sign those eight years.
But now we could be seeing the first player truly follow in the footsteps of Auston Matthews. Last week, it was reported that the Buffalo Sabres and defenceman Rasmus Dahlin were close to an extension.

NHL Rumors: Is Rasmus Dahlin The Next One To Sign? (https://nhlrumors.com/nhl-rumors-is-rasmus-dahlin-the-next-one-to-sign/2023/09/09/)The original report had the Sabres offering Dahlin an eight-year contract extension at $10.5 million. This came from Andrew Peters from the After the Whistle Podcast.
Now Peters is reporting that Dahlin wants a five-year deal while the Sabres want an eight-year deal and Dahlin is upset that the deal is not done yet.

As David Alter of The Hockey News and Sports Illustrated noted on the Full Press NHL Podcast (https://open.spotify.com/episode/6mvWmoN1YHsUc9wF8au3UX?si=miRDDbAcQ4a-FgjokQf0-g), players may start following in Matthews’s footsteps but a lot will be determined by their situation and if the salary cap (https://nhlrumors.com/should-we-expect-the-nhl-salary-cap-to-go-up/2023/09/12/) goes up.
“I think it’s gonna depend on how much more the cap goes up. I really do think so. And just the vibe around and teams like, I think there is a player’s responsibility for the top guys to get the most money there. But if they’re part of something, and they feel like they want a certain situation to kind of stick for a while.
Then maybe they take a bit of a haircut or a little bit less, but it all depends on the confidence in that player and their ability to make bank, Austin Matthews specifically made so much in that second deal that you know you can do these kinds of things.
But I do think it’s all gonna be the economics of the League. If the cap starts going up like 10% per year, then there are gonna be teams and players being like, Hey, you have. You have money to pay me more. And you can make this other stuff work.”

NHL Rumors: Rasmus Dahlin, Shane Pinto, Phil Kessel, Nikita Zadorov and the NY Rangers (https://nhlrumors.com/nhl-rumors-rasmus-dahlin-shane-pinto-phil-kessel-nikita-zadorov-and-the-ny-rangers/2023/09/15/)If you look the Sabres have started negotiations with not only Dahlin, but Owen Power as well according to Pierre LeBrun and Michael Russo of the Athletic (https://buffalohockeynow.com/2023/09/14/are-dahlin-contract-negotiations-at-an-impasse/). They spoke with Kevyn Adams, Sabres GM, and he wants to get out in front of these situations. Get the most value for players who are only going to get better.
But if you look at Matthews and his new deal that kicks in next year, when it is over, he will be 30 years old. If Dahlin only signs a five-year deal, he will be 28 years old, still in his prime and get hit it big once again. An eight-year deal would bring him to 31 years old. No chance to maximize his value again.
If Dahlin ends up signing just for five years this could be the first of many dominos to fall following the Matthews playbook.

The Sabres have a very poor effort in Columbus (https://www.audacy.com/wgr550/sports/sabres/the-sabres-have-a-very-poor-effort-in-columbus)

Unlike last Wednesday, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and very little to no chance on all the goals against him.

Columbus, OH (WGR 550) – Yes, the Buffalo Sabres did overcome a 3-1 deficit on Wednesday to tie the Columbus Blue Jackets in the third period, but they hung their goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen out to dry on all four goals Columbus scored before an empty netter and lost 5-3.

It was a bad, disjointed effort that didn’t make Don Granato very happy,

“It was a disjointed game and you could say it’s preseason or whatever, but we need to be better and we know that. That was below the standard that we want and it was simple, we wanted to play a skill game before the foundation of work and we need to come out and play a work game and we fell behind as a result.”

The game doesn’t count and the team is still a week away from the regular season opener against the New York Rangers, so Granato knows what he wants to do,

“Tonight was an easy one to have a meeting tomorrow to look at things and find the resolve. In the beginning we let the players play, but now it’s time to get ready and there was plenty in that game that we can extract and pull as we prepare for opening night.”

Granato said the coaching staff will bring things to their attention and challenge them.

Connor Clifton showed a lot of rust playing in his first preseason game. He certainly wasn’t alone as many others played poorly too. It’s one thing to play poorly, but it’s quite another to glide back on your back check and stand there as the other team scores goals. Many Sabres forwards were guilty of that.

Buffalo did use goals from Owen Power and Zach Benson to at least tie the game. Benson now has three goals and two assists for five points in five games. He was one of the few bright spots in this game.

Buffalo gets one more chance Friday when they close the preseason at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Right now, that extension for Dahlin(deserved, BTW)will take up just over 13% of the Sabres' cap(per The Sabre Report). That said, as the cap rises per team, over the life of the contract that will look like a steal. Just like the other long-term extensions Kevyn Adams has signed in the recent past(i.e. Thompson, Samuelsson, etc.) Now get to locking up Owen Power and those two will be anchoring the D for seasons to come.

BTW, Matt Savoie was placed on IR today. He is skating through his rehab but has not been cleared for contact as yet.

And it LOOKS like Zach Benson has played himself onto the opening night roster. Cue the "doink doink" sound effect.

One of the best way to look at cap hits is the percentage they take of the cap room.

That percentage will go down as the cap goes up (maths)

So it's fine. It's a bit higher than I had hoped, but ultimately, it's fine.

Dahlin's extension won't kick in until next year; by then, it'll be 12.6% of the team's cap. And by the time it ends in '31-'32, it'll be under 10%.
