If we have to decide, which is your choice? Salary cap may prevent us keeping both.

Although analyzing the Bills' financial picture in future years is always an inexact science, ESPN Stats & Information pegs the Bills to have about $35 million in 2017 cap space given a conservative estimate of a $160 million league-wide salary cap. The number will increase when the Bills carry over their unused salary-cap space from this season (currently $12.15 million, according to the NFLPA), but it also will decrease as more players get deals for next season. Buffalo has only 35 veterans or drafted rookies under contract for 2017; eventually, the top 51 deals will count against their cap.

With those considerations in mind, here are a few situations that can play out in the coming months involving the Bills' top two free agents next spring, Gilmore and quarterback Tyrod Taylor:

Too early to make a choice, have to see how Taylor fares in year 2. In all honesty, if Tyrod doesn't improve and Gilmore's demands are too high I'm perfectly OK letting them both walk.

If Taylor plays at least as well as last year...it isn't even a tough choice.

Make a CB the top priority on the team..you'll spend another 16 years out of the playoffs.

Taylor, maybe. He has a year to prove himself.

CB's are now getting stupid money and the draft will replace Gilmore.

I am salivating at the thought of being able to draft another CB in the 1st round.

Agree. If Taylor plays like this past season, there's no reason not to sign him.

We don't have to decide, and the Bills could afford both next year.

Gilmore is more proven than Taylor because the sample size is much larger. The only question with Gilmore is if he's seeking out ridiculous money. The question with Taylor is how he will play this year. To be a more complete QB, he's going to have to throw to the middle of the field more, which is a lot harder than throwing the long ball or throwing outside. There is a hell of a lot more going on in the middle of the field to be aware of.

Of course, all of this should be obvious to Bills fans. It's also obvious that QB is more important than CB, or anything else. Taylor won't walk if he plays well this year, but Gilmore might if he wants to try to make a ridiculous money-grab in the open market..you never know about that.

Yeah this is kind of a no brainer, assuming Tyrod plays well enough to warrant a deal. The real question would be Gilmore or Sammy? Lets say we lock up Taylor and have the choice to lock up Gilmore or Sammy only one.

Some Taylor contract chit-chat:

Bills, Taylor talking 'frequently' about contract extension
By Vic Carucci Buffalo News Updated 5:08 PM July 27, 2016

..."On one hand, Taylor, who is due to earn $3.1 million in the final year of the contract he signed in 2015, has made a compelling case that he's the best quarterback the Bills have had in a long time and could very well be their best option in the foreseeable future.

On the other, his case was made through the first 14 starts of his NFL career last season, so the Bills must consider the risk of basing their investment on a limited body of work.

For that reason, another source described it as a "unique negotiation."

From Taylor's perspective, he and his representative, Adisa Bakari, clearly have to believe the standard for an extension was established with the $18-million-per-year deal Brock Osweiler signed with the Houston Texans after making his first seven career starts with the Denver Broncos last season.

Taylor also is believed to have helped his cause with the Bills' player-personnel staff and coaches with consistently impressive performances during offseason drills that were dramatically better than anything the other quarterbacks, EJ Manuel and rookie Cardale Jones, demonstrated."...

First they can find a way to keep both.

Tyrod will probably get done this year.

Gilmore should be easier next year. Meatball is almost done and Aaron Williams is a huge question mark. I could easily see both gone next year and cutting Williams would probably leave a cap hit you would be freeing up 10M+ in cap space.

If Gilmore stays healthy this year you almost have to keep him. Letting legit #1 corners walk is bad business in today's NFL. Figure it out at safety next year but you keep Gilly and Darby as long as possible.

welcome to the mindset that will guide us to 20 years without the playoffs

I'll be frank, tyrod could have a step back and he'd still be the priority to sign this off season (unless aaron rodgers suddenly becomes available)

It's as if BUF, CLE, and WAS entered into some sort of unholy competition years ago to see which club can churn the most quarterbacks and head coaches...
