During Tuesday's teleconference among a collection of CEOs from non-BCS schools, Buffalo President William Greiner called the BCS "classic cartel stuff" and compared the BCS to John D. Rockefeller's oil monopoly in the 19th century.

But his best line of the day was this: "There are some people who are, or think they are, the 'haves.'"

Boy, that's a head-shaker. Of course there are haves, schools such as Oklahoma, USC, Florida, Miami, FSU, Michigan, etc., etc. You'd think the president of a school such as Buffalo, which has an excellent academic reputation, would know that. And he also should know that his school is one of the many "have-nots," as well as a "never should have."

Buffalo never should have moved to Division I-A (the Bulls averaged 11,244 fans per game for football and 1,888 in basketball last season). The Bulls moved to I-A in football in 1999 so they could sit at the adult's table and get a piece of the pie. But it's an undeserved piece. Buffalo, like Tulane and some others, is saying, "Well, we don't make enough money from I-A athletics. But you big guys do, so cut us in."

That's like the owner of a mom-and-pop children's clothing store saying that because Wal-Mart is so big and makes so much money, it needs to spread it around to the little guys.

During that same conference call, Tulane President Scott Cowen said his group plans to fight tougher NCAA standards for maintaining I-A membership. The standards are set to go into effect next year.

"They want to drive people out of competition at the Division I-A level," Greiner said.
