McCombs: Tice wasn't ready to coach last season

MANKATO -- The meek were not welcome Friday in Mankato. Vikings players, coaches and even owner Red McCombs reported to training camp spouting some tough talk and announcing high expectations on a sweltering afternoon in southern Minnesota.

During a 20-minute give-and-take with reporters, McCombs produced a few wisecracks at the expense of coach coach Mike Tice -- and, more seriously, hinted that his coach's performance this season could determine his future with the franchise.

Tice, meanwhile, set the tone for what promises to be a physically taxing camp. "I'm a little grumpy," he said, "and I'm looking forward to getting things going." Tice also expressed the organization's exasperation with fourth-round draft pick Onterrio Smith, who inexplicably decided Friday to hold out rather than sign a standard NFL contract.
