    Browns adamant about five-year contracts

Policy says team went out on a limb for some draft picks and wants long-term commitment
    By Patrick McManamon
    Beacon Journal staff writer

BEREA - Carmen Policy confirmed that the Browns want all of their draft picks to sign five-year contracts, and it doesn't sound like the team will back down from that request.

``We feel very strongly about it this year,'' Policy said Friday.

The request for a five-year deal seems to be the major reason none of the team's seven draft picks have signed. Though first- and second-round picks frequently sign five-, six- or seven-year deals, lower-round picks don't.

Agents and players reject them, because it delays the player's ability to get to free agency. The Browns countered by offering a higher signing bonus. Policy said one reason the team is asking for the long-term commitment is because the team ``reached'' to draft some of them.

``We put ourselves out on a limb, way out on a limb in some cases,'' Policy said.
