The NFL Needs A New Commissioner

The NFL brand has become tainted.

Roger Goodell must go if the NFL wants to remain the premier sport in America.

The 60 minute game that was once dominated by commercials has become dominated by "over officious jerks," as Marv Levy would say.

Advertising dollars will soon chase new markets if the change is not made.

Goodell's leadership is missing in action, and his track record proves he is incapable of leading the NFL.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told Sen. Arlen Specter face-to-face that he doesn't regret destroying the Spygate tapes.

Goodell: Destroying Spygate tapes was 'right thing to do'

    Roger....you're fired.

Goodell's an idiot. As Americans, we are culturally conditioned to love football. It's in our blood. Making money with the NFL is the easiest job in the world. Goodell skates as long as the money comes in, which happens in spite of him and not because of him.

I don't get angry at fictitious things.

The NFL used to look real, but now it looks like something out of Arkansas.

Lie, cheat, steal, delete...just so long as the money keeps rolling in.

I feel like a cheap whore watching the NFL these days.

Re: The NFL Needs A New Commissioner

I just watch it for the entertainment and am no longer really emotionally invested in any team.

I'd like the Browns or Bills to win something in my lifetime but if it doesn't happen, I don't really care.

I have no problem with guys like Tom Brady because it's good to appreciate greatness when the league has some of it on display. I hated John Elway as a youngster and feel like because of my hatred I didn't truly appreciate how great he really was.

I don't feel like the league is fixed or anything like that, I just think the refs are pretty god awful terrible all around. Some games they bite you, other games they bite the opponent, and others still they F over both teams pretty equally. All teams have to deal with this and the teams with that elite talent find ways to overcome it over the course of a season, mediocre to average teams wither because of it.

I think if you just take a different outlook on how you watch you games, you'll find that the product is pretty enjoyable overall. Of course, round these parts, it means you have to start watching other teams and just enjoy the game with no emotional attachment since this team hasn't even been very entertaining the past 16 years. Losman running around like a chicken with his head cut off was pretty hysterical though, not gonna lie.

I still just don't remember him as being all that good until when you'd least expect it, rooting against him, not that I begrudge him for what he did when I least expected it, because it was damn good.

On the other hand I think the man has some serious executive chops.

He was awarded "darling" status. That era's Tom Brady. I can't count how many times he launched passes beyond the LOS with a wink and nod from the refs.

When he arrived on the scene...1987...he wasn't a darling. He was still facing some leaguewide backlash for his spurning of the Colts and basically lying about wanting to keep playing baseball. Back then Marino and Montana were the protected NFL "stars"

As Elway got later into his career, 97 and 98, that certainly is true. The league was protecting him and made it easier for him to go out and get a ring...he decided he wanted 2.

I'm not meaning to go on much about Elway, I was actually rooting for him at the end of his career. But he was more like the anointed Andrew Luck of his era. Presumed to be great but not really doing much until the end of his career.

I always thought it was a way fate laughed at me. I hated Stabler. When I wanted him to pull one off, he'd blow it, when I wanted him to fail he was amazing. I thought Fouts was one of the most fearsome QB's I ever saw tear up defenses, but come the playoffs, he became EJ Manuel. I hated the Dolphins, but felt bad for Marino (who I loved at Pitt), he always looked just as deadly to me, but it's like something surreal happened to his receivers and o-line when it came down to glory, they'd forget how to block and catch.

Elway, to his credit, to me anyway, only came alive at moments. They were some amazing moments though.

He's also made a ton of rule changes, and they all suck.

-- Basically eliminated kickoffs which, when executed right, can be the most exciting play in the game
-- Completely bungled the catch ruling to where no one, officials included, knows what constitutes possession. A RB dives over the pile, holds the tip of the ball past the goal line for 0.004 seconds before it's stripped - TD. A receiver catches a pass, takes four full steps in the endzone with possesion, falls over, and the ball pops out by the ground knocking it out - incomplete.
-- moved the PAT back. Stupid and unnecessary.
-- QBs cannot be hit below the belt or above the bottom of their shoulder pads. And if your hand happens to graze the top of their helmet, look out, buddy! That's 15 yards.
-- Eliminated five-yard facemasks. Stupid. There is a huge difference between inadvertent contact and a dude trying to rip a guy's head off.
-- Corners not being allowed to play defense. Gotta keep up high passing yards to keep the fantasy football crowd watching!
-- Stadium BS in an effort to hurt small markets. No, every team on Earth doesn't need a $1.5 billion stadium to complete. Bills built theirs in the 70's and it's somehow too old. Bears and Packers have stadiums that have been around since Woodrow Wilson, but that's somehow cool, though.
-- Arbitrary suspensions that get reduced or extended on a whim. How hard is it to get someone to throw together an Excel worksheet with standard suspension times.
"Miami played pretty damn good today and still got their ass kicked."
