..."In a bizarre span of five days, RB Justin Forsett has gone from the top of Baltimore's depth chart to out of work to Week 1 starter versus the Bills.

... The NFL's new injured reserve rule allows teams to designate one player for return as long as that player remained on the roster for one day after final cuts. Baltimore's brass wanted the option to designate either defensive tackle Carl Davis or safety Matt Elam for a midseason return.

The Ravens essentially convinced Forsett to function as a human loophole. As a vested veteran, he immediately reached free agency rather than being exposed to the other 31 teams on the waiver wire. The running back received a couple of calls over the weekend from interested teams, but no offers were close to Baltimore's."...

Not so slick given they had to eat $1.4M in signing bonus and are paying him $3M this year to be a below average RB.

That's their business, isn't it? It's their money, and their move gave them the option they wanted.

BTW - last season:

McCoy: 203 895 4.4

Forsett: 151 641 4.2

Yeah, I realize it was their money. Again it wasn't a slick move when they likely told him they'd eat his signing bonus and re-sign him for $3M this year, when no one else in the league would have probably even signed him for more than $2M.

And was Forsett playing with a bad hamstring all season long?

I don't know. He played in 10 games last season vs McCoy's 12.

You don't like it that BAL was able to be creative with the rules to keep their options open re Davis and Elam?

Forsett was healthy until he broke his arm in the 10th game. And I didn't say I didn't like it, I said I didn't think it was slick. As for creative, I've seen teams do similar things before. Now it might have been a gamble, but frankly I just don't see much interest in a late pre-season pickup who is almost 31, coming off a broken arm, and who, except for one season, has been a below average RB.

He was on his way to another 1,000 yard season before breaking his arm in week 10.

Keep in mind for 2014:

McCoy - 312 carries for 1,319 yards (4.2 YPC), 5 TD

Forsett - 235 carriers for 1,266 yards (5.4 YPC), 8 TD

Forsett is a good back, no need to put him down.

What would you consider to be a "slick' move by a FO then? I'm always willing to learn.

It wasn't me that was putting him down. You responded to and quoted the wrong poster...I think you meant to respond to Post #6.

Years ago the Bills pulled off a similar move with Steve Tasker, waiving him one week & bringing him back the next, knowing that as a vested veteran he couldn't be claimed on waivers & had agreed to re-sign with the Bills after being waived.

One of the 2 RB's that outplayed him in pre-season (Dixon) may miss the opener, so I'm guessing there's more to the story. Crying need is a good reason.

Sounds Belichickian.
