Cap'n Smith checks in

By ROBIN BROWNLEE -- Edmonton Sun

Jason Smith and Kevin Lowe went all the way to salary arbitration in Toronto to hammer out a new contract a year ago, but there won't be any protracted wrangling over a new deal between the Edmonton Oilers captain and his GM this summer.

Smith, 29, and agent Art Breeze yesterday accepted the qualifying offered tendered them by Lowe. It's a one-year contract that will pay the big defenceman $2.3 million, the same amount he earned last season. The deadline for players to accept qualifying offers is next Friday.

"It puts me under contract for another year and I'm looking forward to playing," Smith said yesterday. "My only real thinking is to be playing and to go out there and try to have a good year."
