Cowboys notice immeditate difference in training camp
SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- The music was off. The motorcycle-riding, squirt-gun-shooting mascot was nowhere near the field.

This was Day One of training camp under Bill Parcells, and it was obvious from the start -- which, by the way, was 15 minutes early -- that the focus was squarely on football.

Tempers flared at the end of Tuesday morning's workout when center Gennaro DiNapoli became engaged in a brief scuffle with defensive tackle Willie Blade.

Coach Bill Parcells immediately intervened, having a face-to-facemask conversation with the players about his feelings on the matter.

Practice came to an end immediately after the fight, but Parcells said that was because "it was over."

Players said they weren't too concerned about the dust-up.

"It happens," running back Troy Hambrick said. "It means we haven't been around a lot of women lately."

Parcells shakes sense into battling Blade

SAN ANTONIO - Bill Parcells won't tolerate any intrasquad conflicts.

He rattled that information into Willie Blade's brain Tuesday. After the defensive tackle got into a confrontation with center Gennaro DiNapoli at the end of morning practice in the Alamodome, the intense side of Parcells, the one that had been just a rumor thus far in training camp, turned up. Parcells stood face-to-face with Blade and grabbed him by the face mask to let him know just what he thought of the on-field fight.

"We don't need that," Parcells said in his daily news conference. "We don't need it. We need to start fighting the guys we don't know instead of the guys we know."

Tight lips result of Cowboys' latest practice session

Apparently fed up with a sloppy practice, Bill Parcells and his coaching staff called the Dallas Cowboys together, said a few words and left for the locker room.

The players, meanwhile, kept practicing.

Led at first by fullback Richie Anderson, the team worked out for about another half hour Sunday afternoon. Several players held play cards and barked out instructions as the drills continued.

Late last season, Jones finally realized he couldn't keep doing things his way. He needed a strong coach, not a perceived puppet like Switzer, Chan Gailey and Dave Campo.

Just when Jones was ready to swallow his pride, open his wallet and let the franchise take on a new front man, he heard Parcells was interested.

A winner everywhere he'd been, Parcells specializes in turnarounds. He'd been away for two years and wanted back in. The Cowboys intrigued him because of the glory that would come with reviving "America's Team."

It won't be easy. Dallas has yet to adequately replace Troy Aikman or Emmitt Smith and there are questions about both lines _ and about Jones' meddling ways.

Bill Parcells marked his 62nd birthday Friday, without getting his wish for a clear-cut decision on who will be the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.

Quincy Carter started the last two preseason games, and responded with two consistent performances. But the coach isn’t ruling Chad Hutchinson, a nine-game starter last season who has played only about three quarters this preseason, as the starter.

“I want to take a good look at films before I decide anything. That’s why I don’t want to go into detail now,” Parcells said after a 15-14 loss at Pittsburgh in which both quarterbacks led long touchdown drives Thursday night. “Everything is subject to change.”
