The deal is: Doing it yourself doesn't pay

Andre Johnson went through three agents before he had his uncertified uncle (Andre Milton) negotiate his long-term deal with the Houston Texans recently. Instead of paying the usual 3 percent fee to an experienced agent, the receiver then paid $50,000 to have the contract certified by an agent approved by the NFL Players Association (Don West). Some players are trying to avoid the customary 3 percent fee by finding other ways to get a deal done. Ricky Williams tried this and signed one of the worst contracts in NFL history for a player of his quality.

Although Johnson's contract in no way could be likened to Williams's deal, in comparison with other rookie contracts, he did leave significant money on the table. Whether that was because he didn't have an experienced agent is up for debate.

According to some of the major players in the agent business, the majority of the teams got the upper hand in negotiations with this rookie class.
